are there timing marks on all cars from new? might seem like a silly question.

should i make this first thing to do, as i was planning to in the morning removing the head checking all is well and after attacking the sump my brother knows more on internals and is going to help.

also how is best to access the bottom cambelt cover should i get the car up in the air

yea you need to remove the driverside front wheel but im sure you can check the cams line up correctly. if your mate knows about engines then he will know how to check that the cams and crank line up as it should.

yes all cars have timing marks one on the bottom pully wheel which will line up with a mark on the cambelt cover, then remove top cambelt cover and youll see a mark on each cam and marks on the rocker cover it should line up with so yea do this before removing the rocker cover and before removing the oil.

yeah if i get the sump off i might as well check everything there, where would i find the torque settings for the bolts at the bottom of the rod

i wouldnt worrie about going down this route yet mate. do the other checks first cos if your going internal then thats alot more involved and best left to the experts :)

start wit the easy things first, do a compression test, take cam cover off only need a 10mil socket and a screw driver, check rockers if ones come off this will be your power loss as that valve will not be working, while thats off turn over by hand and see if all is moving freely..
cambelt jumping on tooth or 2 is also a good shout, you can check that by lineing the mark on crankshaft pully and marks on cam pullys... if your unlucky enough for that to of happened an hear knockin i would think youve bent a valve or 16, but hopfully it is something nice and simple...
these are just my sugestions through having a few engines let go...

if balance belt snaps i would say, as can interfere wit cam belt, ive never had one jump mind, also if its a really old belt and tensioners maybe, or put on incorrectly

If the balance shaft belt has gone and the timing belt has skipped a tooth or 2 then I would consider yourself quite lucky. They have been known to take out the timing belt at the same time resulting in valve-piston contact and a new engine or rebuild needed.

when mine snapped you could here the valves hitting the pistons up untill the point when part of the belt wiped out the crank sensor

ive just had the top inspection cover off before it got dark and all seems ok up top i thought it was off but when i got it lined up they were both 1 tooth from mark so they the same, ill attack bottom one in the morning i take it that its a wheel off and also inner arch to get to it, i had a quick peek under the car couldnt see anything really.

how much would a garage ask for to find the fault initially if it somthing internal as i dont feel too confident if im honest, im gonna ask someone see if they can have a look in their garage but i cant get hold of him atm

they will just charge you for there time mate but most specialists are more reasonable than the dealers.

yes front wheel off and a small section of arch liner. timing mark for the big bottom pully wheel that the aux belt runs on is visible from the to and its on the iner edge of the pully wheel close to the cambelt cover

so just check that that one and the ones on the cams all come in line with there marks at the same time :)

Yea just check the timing marks to start with. Also have a good check around your pipework Where you were working on it recently.

Fqcraig mines making a light tapping noise from what sounds like the top end of the engine was advised by a specialist to give it oil change, so I did if the noise went away but now come back I just run an oil change late. I've asked couple of garage and the lash adjusters cost 150 but costs 2 hours labour so £300 all in for lash adjusters and changing them good luck mate

cheers mate, if i could choose my fault i wouldnt mind the lash adjuster as i could either live with it for a while, remove and clean or replace, but if it was lash adjusters i wouldnt be down on power and chances are i would have the noise at idle too. im afraid it is somthing bigger.

im going to render the car off the road and useless at some point today probably if all my timing marks are spot on as it will be internal

if your lash adjusters need replacing you may as well uprate them as i hear its not too much more, i think 3mm are the recomended ones
