i went out to meet a friend tonight, car drove fine no problems at all for the irst 5 mins, i stopped at a set of traffic lights and when i pulled away i got to 3rd gear and noticed a loud tapping sound and a slight loss in power so i backed off straight away and pulled over, popped the bonnet gave a couple of revs and the tapping sound was still there, so i checked the oil, to my horror its below minimum, i kno bad maintaining on my half i last checked it about a month ago and must have been ok for me not to top up.

no visible oil leaks though. my mate popped to the garage and got me some oil, he is adament that its the tappets. i have had a quick peek online and lash adjusters seem to be popping up as a possible, i have listened to a quick audio clip of last adjusters and it sounds the same although its only hen driving and not at idle.

i have lost power and the noise is constant under load.

can anyone point me in the right direction im actually realy worried as you can possibly imagine.

if it's a tap from the top end it's prob the tappet's or worst the cam's. Is it defo the top? If its run low on oil it could be a number of thing's! More than likely the tippet tho mate do a full oil change see if that's help's and go from there. My pence worth.:)

I had a problem with bad tappets on my iv that sounded pretty bad,got told the really loud tap was one sticking!. It was alot worse when the oil got low and I topped it back up with cheap stuff from garage and it never helped but a full oil change with good oil done a while( I use silkolene pro s ) but it's pos time for a tappet change, got mine changed 3 months ago and been fine since.must admit though never noticed a power loss but starting with oil is a good idea mate

You've got an 8, so you'll have the updated lash adjusters, if topping up the oil and having a little drive hasn't cured it, I'd be looking towards your bottom end. Where does the sound seem to be coming from? Have you used the screwdriver method to locate the sound?

The sound seems to be coming from the top side. I'm going to make sure my recirc valve is on properly as I changed the spring in it last nit but was gettin dark towards the end so I may have a slight leak from there and hopefully that will account for my power loss.
I've had no lights pop up on the dash I would have thought oil warning should have come on. Lash adjusters and new oil is my prefered outcome here

Noisey tappets affect all Evo's with the 4G63 engine (ie, Evo 1-9),there was no "uprated" lash adjuster on newer Evo's, they are all the exact same.

I would try changing oil and cleaning out your tappets first. I was going to do mine this weekend, but the weather has been poor.

I was under the impression the later evo's were fitted with the 3mm holed ones from discussions over the road.

Craig take your camcover off and check the rockers, i had one fall off a few years ago on an E8 engine, the only thing left salvageable on engine was the crank....... it only takes a few mins to get cover off so well worth it,
usually the lash adjuster quiten down wit revs..

let's hope it's just the tappet's then mate. If you're got a little leak that could be why you had power loss. It was the power loss want made me think it could be some else. edit better take it in mate have a pro look at it tomor! Where do you normally go? Is it near can you drive?

Nope, they are all identical. Says so in the MLR Evo Buyers Guide, and I have the Mitsubishi CAPS system on my PC which says they are identical part numbers, so no, they do not have 3mm ones out the factory.

Maybe the Evo X does, but not the Evo I-IX.

I have a PDF copy of the guide made on MLR on how to do this, so PM me your e-mail addy and I'll send it over. The guide says you can use pry-bars to compress the springs and get the rockers in & out, but my mate who did it said a pry-bar will get it out without much fuss, but it's a nightmare getting them back in with pry-bars and MUCH easier if you use the proper tappet tool.

There is a template to make the tool yourself on MLR, but I bought on off eBay for £10.

One for sale on eBay for £9.99 + £3 delivery.... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/mitsubishi-gt...0594846292&po=&ps=63&clkid=106252093833242349

hi mate dont want to make you cry, i did a similar thing in my evo iv had next to no oil, had a big tapping sound when i reved the car at idel it was fine no noise, tuck out the tappets cleaned them filled up with oil the sound was still there, it sound like the top of the enginge but it wasnt. one of my shell bearings got had hot coz of no oil it kinda warped and slipped out of place, so the tapping was the piston hitting the the headmy crank eas to badle scored so imchanging the hole thing if do didnt drive yours to long after you filled it up with oil to it might be fine you migh have to get your crank reground otherwise mate. this is just a worse case tho doesnt mean its happend to you . in the middle of doing mine now with my mate jay.

at this point I'd be more worried about the loss of power (cam timing jumped maybe??) , I take it there is no sign of burning oil?

to go from full oil to below minimum in a month and no sign of leaks is worrying.

check that the cambelt timing marks are correct. it could be that the balance shaft belt has snapped which can cause the cambelt to jump teeth.

id be removing the lower cambelt cover for an inspection :)

are there timing marks on all cars from new? might seem like a silly question.

should i make this first thing to do, as i was planning to in the morning removing the head checking all is well and after attacking the sump my brother knows more on internals and is going to help.

also how is best to access the bottom cambelt cover should i get the car up in the air

if you are taking off the sump have a good look for swarff in the bottom of the oil pan if there is its mostlikely your bottom end that needs looking at if youve got the oil pan out you might aswel check take the caps off and look at each shell bearing and run your finger over the crank to see if theres any scoring. it worth a look
