Newb from Spain...

hello all,

Just purchased an Evo 4 from a guy from Japan. Lovely car....just trying to get it running again. I believe the fuel pump is bad but I don't know where the hell it is. I just know I can't hear the thing prime and I think he killed it by running it out of gas when the fuel level guage went bad(1/4 was actually empty).

Car turns over fine but just won't start up. Timing belt is good...oil is good, was a tad low....the plugs actually look like there a bit rich but maybe that is from me trying to start the car so many times after it died. Was running strong a week ago, only kind of sounds coming from under the hood were that of what seemed to be "clutch chatter" nothing like rod knock. Maybe you guys can help me out by letting me know where this fuel pump is or let me know where to order a new engine in the UK

Cars looks to be well maintained, the guy I bought it from purchased it from a real car guy about 2 months ago. The guy barely knew how to drive stick...poor car Finally I got him to sell it to me but I hope its not too late to revive her. He said he was on the highway coming back home, then he would hit the gas and the car wouldn't accelerate, like it lost power, heard that "clutch chatter" sound some more, then when he pulled off into the gas station it cut off, it wouldn't start back up.

Here are the plugs....they look at tad bit rich but that could be from trying to start many times after it had died. Also the fuel tank was pretty much empty, we put gas in the car, still didn't fire up.

Looks like the car is just full bolt on w/supporting mods for the stock turbo. Like a perfectly well balanced street car, I can't see the engine blowing up like that. The guy didn't beat on the car much, he could barely drive it. It was getting shipped from Japan, so its been sitting about 2 months, been driving it a week and now this happened. You think the engine is done? I can't do a compression test because I have yet to find a store in Spain selling one . I couldnt really check for spark working on the car by myself. I just know I don't hear a fuel pump priming at all. Can anyone tell me where it's located for sure. I pulled the back seat out. I see (2) Identical covers but I don't know if either of those give access to the fuel pump.

Should I at least be able to hear the stock fuel pump prime when I turn the ignition over? Thanks for any help on the matter fellas and glad to be here...

aright bud and welcome to the forum your def in the right place.
well you have 2 filters there is one under the bonnet and one in the fuel tank itself ill go look out some pics of one under the bonnet to give an idea where it.the one in the fuel tank is under the cover behind the driver side but the fuel tank needs to be removed to get to it unless u cut the fuel pipes but that is up to you m8

Yes the pump is where you think it is but as Ross has explained, the tank will need to come off to remove it properly.

You can cut a little bit of the plate surround area and work the pump away like that but not advisable really.

Have you checked the pump relay to see if it is switching???

The crank shaft sensor might have been knocked away or have come loose if there is clutch chatter like you say there is.

My advice is go to a decent mechanic over there unless you are handy yourself, in which case I will advise you on what to do but you will need access to a ramp!

Thanks for that input, so I need to drop the tank to replace the fuel pump or the filter...or both of them? I think I spotted the fuel filter under the hood(near the passenger side fender). Which method do you suggest for pulling the fuel pump, dropping the tank or cutting the hoses? Or at least checking the fuel pump...

It looks like I'm going to have to replace everything in there...the float assembly, pump, filter. I'm assuming when I take the cover off, I will have access to the top of the fuel pump. Maybe then I could take a Digital Volt/Ohm meter to it to check for current and resistance. Can you hear your fuel pump prime?

Thanks for the reply....there isn't much for great mechanics out here in Rota, Spain....I consider myself somewhat handy, I have did a majority of the things to my other cars. I did also think of the crankshaft position sensor, I just have no idea where it is? Back of the head possibly? I'll check the fuse boxes for a fuel pump relay. I'm guessing that's under the hood. I'm going to hunt down some access ramps or jacks/jack stands tomorrow. Hopefully the tank isn't too hard to drop...

If it is indeed the pump that has gone, you will be better off putting in a Walbro pump as it will be better in the long run.

Do you have access to a ramp???

I will get Jamie to come over and advise you further too. He has genuine Walbro pumps available at a very nice price and will advise you properly on how to get the job done too in his opinion.

I am a little tied up right now, but will monitor to make sure you get the help you need.

not a problem m8 well the best option is to remove the tank the filter is actually on the fuel pump itself if your removing all this you would be aswell put in a walbro 255 upgraded fuel pump which u can get from one oh the lads on here jamie@evotune.. thats if it aint got one allready and you get the filter with the pump!


but to do it without removing the tank you will have to cut the 2 fuel lines which go into the pump and once putting back together just join with proper fuel hose not just normal hose if that makes sense (but this method is not advised though!)

Are you getting fuel to the fuel rail ? and can you hear the pump working when the engine is cranked ? also have you checked to see if the pump is getting a live feed when the engine is cranked ?

I just got the car towed to my house yesterday....still waiting on someone to loan me some tools, I'm new to the area. I really can't hear much over the engine cranking when I attempt to start it.

When I can get a helping hand Ill put a volt meter to the fuel pump and try to crank the engine to see if its receiving a signal. When I pulled the sparked plugs out they were a little wet so I think I'm getting some kind of fuel to the rail....Doesn't make a lot of sense though.

Should I pull the fuel rail and injectors off attempt to crank the car to see if their spraying?

Shouldn't there at least be an engine code for me to get? I got nothing...and the guy just told me, he had a small fuel leak under the car at one of the nuts...he replaced the nut but never used any kind of teflon tape to seal it.

This thing could be a nightmare. I'm thinking it's fuel related, although I'm gonna look around and see if I can spot the crankshaft position sensor.

Hola! I live in Cadiz in the city of Rota...southern Spain. I just moved here recently, I love it so far, minus the lack of car enthusiasts and the scooters and ugly cars everywhere haha.

I pulled the fuel filter cover off....attempted to crank the car and listen, of course it was hard to hear anything while the car was trying to start BUT I did hear the fuel pump finally once I would stop cranking it. I would hear it wine for a few seconds then go off.

As I talk to the guy more he said lately, he'd be cruising along in gear and then sometimes whenever he would let off of the gas pedal to slow down(engine braking). The rpms would drop and the car would just shut down right under a 1000rpms while it was still moving. Here are some pics of the fuel tank area...I can smell fuel, I'm sure its from the line that was leaking at the connection point though:

Looks like you have quite a bad fuel leak there
