What boost controller have you got? To test actuator put a single piece of hide between turbo and actuator and it should boost way less than 1 bar. That will test that. As for the crank walk from what I gather the main bearings in the middle of the crank wear and the crank walks from side to side

They have no thrust bearing, there face fit so the wear is directly on the block face

they do have thrust, but on the 4 its integrated into the main bearing, later ones are seperate and work much better

So where's the block damage come from rich

the thrust bearing wears and wears the thrust face of the crank into a concave shape, then continues to munch away until crank meets block which scraps them both.

normally the crank sensor is smashed before it gets that far but there's sometimes enough space between the sensor and the pickup for the bad damage to happen!

Right so it can wear it that far! If the block and crank is damaged isn't it a case of replacing crank and replacing the thrust even though the block s took a hamering ? Is it possible to replair ?

no, it damages the mounting face for the center main bearing so block and crank are scrap.

And there's no way to machine the face and shim the face up? Just interested if there's a repair out there without replacing the block

you probably could do but i wouldn't spend a penny repairing a 4 block, straight in the bin for me!

yes im pretty sure they will fit! Each one got better or stronger so an 8 or 9 bottom end with the rod's and piston's would be your best bet. Or a whole new engine? But i would get the end float check first and if the trust bearing can be changed in time! Will save you a couple of grand mate!:)
