From one angle it looks like the crack has been welded and from another angle it looks to be a straight through crack.

My advice is this buddy:

If you think it was done by the guy that changed your clutch then it has been like this for some time now with NO issues so you might as well ride it out until you have the funds to change it. The warranty on the engine should not be affected at all.

This will buy you time to find a gear box at a good price rather then having to get one right now at a rate dictated to you.

Having had said that Ollie, the up side of changing it right now is that you will save on the labour charges as the gearbox has to be detached from this block a reattached to the new block any way so you will not have to pay a penny. It will cost you a minimum of £150 later on, but, you may not have to change it for God knows how long.

In short mate, it is up to you and your wallet.

Ask the guy to confirm whether or not it has been welded or chemical metal has been used to seal it.

Get in touch with the guy that fitted the clutch as this type of crack will not occur unless the box is dropped or huge force is used to pry it off and in extreme cases, when tightening (but this is very rare in a tightening scenario).

I very much doubt that he will be of any help or assistance to you now though. Assuming it was him, he never mentioned it at the time so why would he admit to it know????

How much do these guys want for the gear box anyway???

I have seen a few gearboxs with that lug snapped off and its done so stupidly and easily avoided...

when changing clutches on your back its hard to locate the transfer box back on to the gearbox, so what people do is.....

They line the transfer box up the best they can and then put a bolt in to pul the transferbox onto the gearbox,,,,, theres no need to do this but "some" inexperienced mechanics see it as a short cut.

the transfer box is held on by 6 bolts. 3 on top and 3 along the bottom. As El has said you could get away with not changing the gearbox now but in my eyes its half a job and "might" put undue strain on the transfer box due to not weight being supported in that area.

With reguards to what this garage is supplying. What do they concider to be a reconditioned engine? In my eyes this would include a new oil/water pump and bearings and such like. if this is the case i think its a good price but if its not then i think its a bit expensive. I could of supplyed and fitted a 6 engine with new oil and filter for £2200 all in

I hope some of this helps

On a side note... ask them to inspect your old engine as if the shells have broken down there will be metal fragments in your oil and in that cae i would HIGHLY recomend you change the oil cooler.

This brings me onto another question to ask them..... the evo 4 oil cooler pipes will not fit onto the evo 6 engine.. ask how they plan on getting round this problem.. they can either have new pipes made up, change the complete oil cooler and pipes to a later model or change the oil filter housing for your one.

Valid points indeed.

I am under the assumption that they may have changed the big end bearings/inspected and cleaned the pistons/crank and just jetted/cleaned the engine and components, changed the head gasket and called it reconditioned.

I very much doubt that they will have replaced the oil/water pump for new ones.

The price is OK considering that they have recovered the car and will be delivering it too.

It all depends on whats being done with the engine and who fits it. i evaluate this on a case to case basis.

for instance... if im selling an engine to someone that intends to run in excess of 400hp by cranking up the boost straight away then i only gaurantee that it works and runs as it should.

but if its going in a completly standard car and is being fitted by a reputable mechanic then i can offer warranty

That's why I thought he is getting an OK deal because they can't be making too much off him.

The last job I did which was similar to that was when I transplanted Tazmania24's engine into Naz1's car a couple of months back.

I charged him £2100 for that and changed his clutch, skimmed his fly wheel replaced all fluids including AYC, I also recovered the car for him from Welwyn Garden City to Birmingham and reprogrammed his Clifford which had gone haywire!!!

Granted, the engine was not a reconditioned unit but had seen only 28k miles warranted and it was from a zero fighter, not that it makes a difference:D

Yeh, I remember you rang T to ask about the engine. I was sitting next to him when you called:D

Raufy was saying that he did not want to take the job on as we had had calls from all over the show. On top of that, Naz was texting me at least 10 times a day with different questions but me and T saw the funny side of it even though the enquiries were going on for well over a week even though he had booked the car in:D:D:D

We're a considerate bunch really and £2100 is a lot of money to hand over even if you know the people at the start but man Naz is one ParaTrooper;)

He still apologises to this day when he calls or emails me.

Some mothers do have um I suppose:D!!!

Guys,

Thanks so much for pointing this out!!

I'm asking the chap about the oil cooler now - I'm having the box replaced at the same time for a 26k evo 6 box (£495 fitted) - Reason for this, my clutch was changed only about 15 miles ago - Once I had it changed, I took the car for a blast and that’s when the engine problem happened. So I've only done 15 miles with the box like that - If it was of course the guy that changed my clutch and I seriously reckon it was him because of the noise's I could here from inside my house, when they where changing the clutch on my driveway.

Just found out now - The oil cooler is all going to be changed for a later model 6 or 7.

I should have the car back in 3-5 working days and I'll let you.

Cheers,
Ollie

Why are you getting charged labour on the gear box???

They would have to remove the gearbox from your old engine and then put it on the new one anyway:confused::confused::confused:

Have a word with them regarding the labour because they have already charged you this in the original price.

I am sure you could find a gearbox cheaper then that too!

El,

I'm not being charged labour on the gear box - Just 495 inc vat and fitted - It is from an 11k evo 6 box - Plus the chap is giving the car a complete going over - Which is what I really want, so I know when I get the car back its going to be like a new car from scratch for me - So I know that it going to warmed up and down, the right fuel going in every time - Not fully abused - Therefore if he is making a little bit of money back up on this box - I'm not to bothered mate, as he is going to list everything for me that he has done - Also to mention, prior to the engine going, the car was over boosting and cutting out on boost - That problem is also going to be put right. I'll be happy to get the car back in good working order, so I can look after it (un like the dude before me) - I will let you know all about it when I get it back. Lucky for me - I didn't pay top money for the car, if I had, I would of been devastated.

Again many thanks to yourself and John@evobreakers, who I must say to John, I'm sorry for not chucking the business, coz you guys have both been very helpful.

Cheers,
Ollie
