Its not a silly rule and its not changing.
Its there to protect both the seller and the buyer as it stops ads being changed once people have read them and so stops issues of miss-selling.
It also stops issues where someone posts something offensive or otherwise naughty, an other person seeing and responding and the first post being changed to make the first person appear to be the villain. Which does happen.

If your ad have changed post a follow up or even a new ad!

Why should I just post a new thread for my car sale ad when I just want to change some details within the ad? Just seems mad to me - But hey its your site and if it makes you happy n all.

Think of it from the point of a dodgy seller (or dodgy buyer).
Sale happens.
Posted out.
Naughty seller edits post to add in defect or change spec or similar
Item arrives but not as described originally but as currently described.
Issue.

Im sorry if you cant see the problems which can and do arise from enabling editing but im afraid I know the issues from experience and the rule wont be changing.
If you dont want to post a new thread either report the post like you did before, add the change to a new post in the same thread, pm me or email me. Lots of ways to handle it.
