What does the gauge sit at when it is just idling? And what does it peak at? Could it be possible the gauge just isn't calibrated? Next time you're at a garage (a proper one) they can quickly plumb a gauge in to see how it compares to yours.

Mine use to go to 0.5 too when reved on standstill I found it was due to the gauge as I was using a 52mm autogauge. Didn't happen when I changed to a greddy 60mm gauge

You will get a little positive boost when revving in neutral (just ask all the chavs showing off their dump valves in the car park).
