It's blade stall on a turbo.
Air flows through it and goes somewhere. So when it has nowhere to go, BOV or dv, then it goes backwards against the flow of the blades ....

Personal choice. But the evo seems to be smoother and better with a recirc dv

I recently when from VTA bov to recirc, then reversed the recirc valve to give a chatter noise. Sounds awesome and you will notice an increase in power too.

As far as I'm aware, and I could be wrong, turbo chatter is bad for the turbo.

You will not get more power from this unless the valve was previously leaking. However you could get better throttle response which might make it feel quicker?

If it's started dumping early and your getting stalling issues, then the spring has got weaker or you have altered the stiffness. Reset it to harder setting or or replace spring.

Not particularly bad for the turbo. Prob no more than pops/bangs. The std evo turbos are quiet hardy lol

You can run without a dv. Ssqv is not adjustable as far as I know. But you can change the spring for new or stronger one.
