Newbie on the prowl for a nice evo 4/5/6

Hi all,

I thought I'd join an owners club and find out a few things before rushing into buying one of these, so hi to you all!

As the title states really I'm on the lookout for an evo 4,5 or 6, standard or modded not too fussed, I'm looking at selling my mk2 Crx 200+ bhp and have wanted an evo for years now,

Can anyone tell me common faults/things to watch out for?

If Youre going for anything less than a 6 make sure that its had a newer engine eg 4 with 6 engine as prone to crank walk.

I keep hearing this, what's with this crank walk? How does it happen? what does it do?

Crank moves laterally due to wearing a thin washer away at the end of it. A flaw in its design & was corrected in newer engines. Am a relative newbie too but learning fast with help from some great guys on here ☺

Unsure if it was corrected until the 6.... someone with a little more knowledge will drop into convo & be able to tell you 100%

The 5 (V) onwards don't suffer,4's are lovely cars but if I bought one I'd wang one with a newer engine fitted

Crank walk in most but not all 4's and earlier.
It's caused by the thrust washer design. Being integrated with the bottom bearing and not having a large surface area. Possibly also caused by oil feed issues. The later model's 5 onwards had a separate thrust washer and it was larger/thicker with a little better oil feed design.
They can all suffer crank walk through abuse and a heavy clamping clutch. I've seen a 9 with the thrust washer destroyed and block damage due to heavy abuse :-o
