High electric bill

We have been checkin the readings on our electric meter for the last couple of weeks as we received a letter from n-power saying they needed them.

We did this and sent the form back and received a call asking us to do a log for a couple of days and email them over to them.

Long and short of it they are saying we owe them on top of what we have paid since march 2012 the sum of £6700 wtf. We are on estimated billing and they read the meter roughly 6 weeks ago and a few months ago. We are paying 20p for the first 130kwh and 14p there after. By my rubbish maths they are saying we owe for 42,000 units of electric on top of what's already been paid over the last year.

There is 3 of us in the house, 2 of us work full time and one part time and she mills around the house throughout the day.

We do use the little electric heaters to heat the house as we have no gas or oil fitted just yet that's coming this summer.

I'm sure the meter is broke because its ridiculous what they are saying, we have used nowhere near that much.

Is there any electric engineers or anyone that works for a power company that can help with this?

First things first Craig you need to go in the loft and turn those heat lamp's off and then actually remove the cable feeding them from the output side of the meter and re-wire it into the input side of the meter you numpty:whistling::razz:

why not get something like a [ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004NCS0BW/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=6738&creativeASIN=B004NCS0BW&linkCode=as2&tag=x0d-21"]currentcost[/ame] so you can see how much power you are using at any time.

Key meter is where i charge a key up with say £20 at local shop and i put it in the electric meter and thats how much worth of electric i have.
Got 5 storage heaters but only use 2, not sure on KW.
I have economy 7 water heater also but dont have that on every night, atm im using £1.70 to heat up the storage heaters, £1.10 for me and the missis to have showers in the mornings, it uses 20-30p per day whilst were at work, £1-1.30 in the evening with cooking and watching tv etc.
So im using about £4ish a day atm.
key meter rates are higher than direct debit or monthly billing.

Ah right I see, 4 quid would be ok for us as it stands but this ridiculous how much they want, all we an hope for is they test the meter and it turns out to be over reading

You could get an electrician to put a credit meter after the electricity boards meter and compare the readings over a week or so just to confirm it is incorrect.

The reconditioned meters are only about £20 or less.

I work for UK Power Networks who probably own your meter mate. It seems pretty obvious by what you are saying that something is terribly wrong. The first assumption is that the meter is broken, but that is very uncommon from what I know. The most likely problem is that your supply is being stolen from a neighbour. The first thing you need to do is switch absolutely everything off in your house and see if anything is being used at all. If a tiny bit is being used, it is likely that you have forgotten to turn something off, but if a substantial amount is being used, it would confirm the most likely reason.
