hi folks, names kev and live in fife.

I am looking at buying an evo 4 in the next few weeks so just thought i would come on here and ask a couple of questions to make sure i get the right one etc.

Currently got a Clio 172 which is sitting at 190ish bhp so quite a big jump up to an evo but nothing i cant handle. I have had an mr2 turbo so already know the ins and outs of the jap world, or atleast i think i do.

If i am quite honest evo's have never appealed to me but then neither did the clio i got so wouldnt mind trying one out. decided i want a 4 as i like the look of them more than the others.

Just a few questions on them though, I have done a bit reading so know what to look for. I know they use the TD05 turbo, what sort of boost can these handle safely? obviously i would need an ebc and something to alter the fuel cut. Would i need to make any other mods? I would be happy with it at 350fwhp. is this easy to achieve without running the risk of damaging anything?

Where do you get parts from for the evo's for the likes of servicing and is there anything i should look out for when tuning them? air/fuel ratio, knock etc?

any info will be much appreciated and i cant wait to get my hands on one :)

cheers, kev

aright m8 and welcome to the forum

well its the 4 gsr that i drive and i love it there are a few who disagree as it is the weaker engine of them all you prob heard off crank walk??

you will also need to get yoursel an evo 5/6/7 ecu and injectors to be able to gain that power as you cant re map the 4 ecu also get a de cat an uprated fuel pump induction kit boost controler and you will be more or less there bud and you will be able to get the majority off your parts from the lads on here and at a great price too
also if you see one you like put a thread up on here with pics and info and we can have a look at it and put down are thoughts and comments m8

hope this helps m8:)
ross

ps you will not be dissapointed!!!:)

hi mate,

yeah the crank walk? To do with the crank moving from side to side in the bearings/journals or something isnt it?

say i got an evo 6 ecu i would then have to get injectors from an evo 6 aswell? or get a piggy back system to control them. Just talking from experience when i had the mr2 as this is similar to the route i went with that.

do the 4's have air flow meters or are they controlled by temp sensors? im not too clued up on them at the mo as you can tell. What is the standard boost level and what can i taker it to safely (where does fuel cut come in)?

is boost restricted in 1st and 2nd gear?

Thanks for the reply

yeah think rossy did mention that. suppose its common sense. will probably be the first thing i do aswell as a boost guage.

so how do i tell if the evo i go to look at is suffering from crank walk? what causes it?

i heard somewhere that with the evo's you cant sit and let them sit and warm up, you have to drive it straight away but obviously not on boost.

what about heads, head studs and head gaskets? i know on the mr2's they suffered from headlift when you put anything more than 1.1 bar through the earlier ones. do evo's suffer from the same?

i really cant wait to get my hands on one now!

to be perfectly honest with u mate i would be more inclined to go for a v as alot of what u are planning to do i.e change ecu so u can up power

v already has re-mappable ecu

crankwalk as far as i know it doesnt suffer from it

there are many pro`s and cons but if u think of it this way by the time u have spent on mods for a iv that a v already has u will be in the same ball park figure as just buying a v or vi for that matter

iv`s are ok if u want that style and u dont like the v etc

so my other advice would be buy a iv with a latter engine:)

Go for the 5 mate

If your looking to up the power IMO the 5 would be better as internals are stronger and you wont have the hassle of a new ecu, injectors etc :)

Plus the 5 has some uber cool rally look styling :ninja:

Welcome to the club dude

I think u would be better buying a 5 also as the mods u are looking at would be never ending on a 4

Only other suggestion would be to buy a 4 with a later engine ;)

I have a evo 4 with a 7 engine And Apexi management and its awesome lol

i think by the way you guys are talking i am better going for a 5 then!

i do like the 4s the best looks wise but the 5 is still a nice car so its a small price to pay for the better engine which at the end of the day is why people buy these things! im not too keen on anything after the 5 though.

So with the 5 is there anything different to look for when buying one? is it just the same car apart from looks and better engine internals?

Thanks for your honest opinions guys!

you wont go wrong with a decent 5 my personal experiences with the 5 are as follows

actuator can seize due to there being no top hat on it so could do with uprating

brake discs are usually warped and do warp if u only have standard discs

make sure all dash lights come on and go off after starting

make sure cam belt has been changed recently and all oils have been changed ayc, gearbox engine etc

the usual problems caused by ayc faults are donkey noises from the rear when cornering hard

door panels on v`s tend to peel away from the doors

radio mayneed changing if its a fresh import there is a converter u can buy from halfrauds for pennies that will sort that tho

bottom crank pulley can fall off as it has a rubber seal on it,this perishes and it falls off but easily replaced and not too expensive

also be maticulous when checking for rust as they can look immaculate from the top but underneath can be rotten as a pare(not me someone on another forum had this prob)

those are just the few problems ive had with both of mine and ive owned both over 2 years so not too much to of spent

fuel is a nightmare tho as in they drink it!

take someone with you mate if your unsure

Alright mate if your looking for an evo 4 I would suggest that you take your time until you find one which already has uprated internals or even a complete newer model engine also with a brembo brake conversion as theb standard brakes on Evo 4s are rubbish these would be seriously expensive upgrades to carry out after buying an Evo 4 but I have seen cars with above spec only very slightly higher priced than standard Evo 4s.

Make sure you see reciepts to prove all work.

If this sounds a bit much just buy a 5 ha

Hi and welcome to our little Forum Kev!!!

I have to agree with Steve in saying that the V is your best bet!

As everything has been covered, I will just add that whoever told you to just start the car and drive it to avoid Crank Walk has the wrong end of the stick to say the least.

You should always let it warm up and not dip the clutch at all until the temperature gauge has moved off the bottom mark.

Crank walk is unavoidable as it was a design flaw.

Letting the engine warm up and not dipping the clutch until that time will help to prolong the inevitable.

Keep us posted on how you get on.
