please can you guys read all the following info and have a really good think wheather or not I should keep worrying,

I bought my evo 4 about a month ago, I bought it off a mechanic who was badly in debt and had to let it go, it has.....

*2000 miles on fully rebuilt motor by a specialist
*new thrust bearing and acl big ends
*evo 9 crank rods and pistons
*balance shaft delete kit
*crank and rods balanced
*MR cams whatever they are
*full top end rebuild
*new manual and hydraulic cam belt tensioner
*obviously new cam belt
also evo 8 turbo

about the noise... its a constant whine as soon as the engine fires and it doesn't go away, it rises with the revs, its hard to put into text but its like a zhoooo zhoooooo as you rev, like a tiny supercharger or perhaps a tiny reverse gear sound, its not REALLY loud but is noticeable,

what ive done to investigate.....
taken off the serpentine aux belt and run it, no change at all,
taken off all the cam cover, no change to noise again and it didn't get any louder,
cam belt itself has reasonable slack
I investigated the turbo shaft for play today but that's fine, im SURE the noise isn't turbo related
sometimes it seems like the sound is coming right from underneath the plenum? but im sure nothing under there could make noise,

so what now? I talked to the mechanic who owned the car before me, he said he investigated the cam belt and tensioners, he says its all as new and spot on, he slackened the cam belt slightly just to see, but the noise was still the same so he tightened it again to factory and just lived with the strange whine!

so is that what I do? live with it or keep investigating, only trouble is whats left? apart from that the car runs like a dream and pulls clean and strong, there isn't even any top end, tappet type noise

any suggestions? im wondering if evo motors are just a bit whirrey ?

thanks v much everyone let me know what you all think! :)

just to say it has had all its air con removed and I presume its running an rs aux belt as there is no ac compressor anymore,
fq craigus on here says a strange whine like ive described started on HIS evo when he removed the ac pump and fitted an rs belt
has anyone else had this?!

Sounds like alternator bearing, best to take it to a garage which know what they are doing!?

Could be a number of things

gonna give in and let Mitsubishi look at it tomorrow, its the only way, its nothing that the aux belt drives, I know that, I know the cam belt and tensioners are fine, im gonna ask Mitsubishi to look at and or change the cam belt idler wheel or wheels, not sure if it has one or two idlers?

Did you get this problem sorted? My uprated alternator sounds like that from new, I like it. Sounds like a third cam.

not sorted yet! its nothing on my aux side as I ran the car without the serpentine belt and no change in sound, I now have a high quality gates racing cam belt kit, with idler and two tensioners and balance shaft belt,
I hope that sorts the whine, if not then I have no idea what it is!!!
just need to find someone competent enough to do the cam belt and set it to the proper factory tension etc!
cheers!
