Geof mate, people are chasing the 500 figure more and more now...

And as for a winner based on figures. You could have the car mapped to run the figures but it drives like sh*t on the road and thats just no good. I know of several cars that are running less power than others but because of the mapping they can keep up or even out perform the higher powered cars because they can't reach those figures except for in a small optimum rev range that you just can't keep it in on the road

A fair point Geof.

I think that you may be onto something here but the tests would have to be a little more across the board, not just BHP and Torque figure restrictive.

There would need to be a whole lot more taken into consideration such as Fuel Trims for one.

Hi Andy, why do you want to break the link between anyone with a laptop and cable that does mapping with the geekm@pped name?

isn't that what geekm@pped is all about? a place for people to learn and gain cracking advice about car tuning?......surely a site such as this will obviously have people from very little knowledge to very good mappers.

....are you planning on turning geekm@pped into a commercial mapping buisiness as that would make sense as to why you dont want the name tarnished?

Regards.

Hi Sponners,
The reason for wanting to break the link is to do with money as I've already mentioned. People are using the geekmapped/geekmapper name in order to make money and that is against the ethos of the site completely. Furthermore, as has been eluded to by El then when people who have very little knowledge of what they are doing start offering their services as 'geekmappers' and start to blow up engines (which is inevitable in my opinion) then Graham and I can't be bothered with all of the hassle with the 'geekmapped blew up my engine' threads that will no doubt start to appear.

I've been trying to make this point for quite some time now on the MLR and point out to people that there is no such thing as a 'geekmapper' etc. but it doesn't seem to be making any difference.

Geoff,
As for a comparison of one ECU vs another then IMHO it only comes down to who is pressing the buttons. There are more features available via ECUFlash than there are using Ecutek but the fundamentals are identical in that you are changing exactly the same values in the same ECU therefore the only difference will be the person pressing the buttons. What is interesting is that the new version of ECUtek software coming out very soon contains a lot of the features that are currently available in ECUFlash and so they've looked at what is available and then come up with their own versions of the same thing.

meerly a suggestion

i understand that the idea of geekmapped is to offer free and impartial advice to self mappers or to those who want to know what the garage down the road have been doing with their pride and joy all afternoon, but am i right in thinking that geekmapped is fast becoming a well known name?

why not make a profit side of things too, maybe you have thought of this.

if you have licenced geekmappers people using services from a non recognised geekmapper does so at their own peril and therefore cant crush the good name.

obviously this would be a little more work than just moderating a website but makes the brand biggers earns you dosh ect ect.

like i say just a suggestion because if you dont take steps peopel will just keep mapping under your name and theres not much you can do about it

thanks for that Andy, its a shame that a 'name' can cause so much aggro.

I'm not sure how you'll be able to break the connection now though between a 'self mapper' and a 'geekm@pper' as the name is too commonly recognised/used.

....people keep calling me a geekm@pper, yet from day one I've always said I'm not!

I think that yourself and Gary;) are going to have to take crap from time to time with people knocking the geek name.

IDE like to see a shoot out :whistling: same type of cars one geek mapped the other ecutek mapped ;) Both mapped on the same day on the same roads

as Andy has mentioned Geof, when it comes to the basics of tuning and making power the ecu is just controlling x amount of fuel at any given time and x amount of ignition advance (fire spark plug) at any given time.

the only difference between ecutek and ecuflash is the software that changes the 'numbers' in areas of the map.

Say for instance you wanted to change to ecuflash over ecutek just for the added features -chav, bang, valet etc. then you would just copy the numbers exactly from your current map over to the ecuflash map and the car would drive identical and produce identical power.

....again as Andy said making a good map is just down to the guys pushing the buttons and not the software itself.

:D

WTF has been going on while I've been away?! Laptop dies for a week or so and all hell breaks loose!

As said tho, there is no such thing as a "geekm@pper", however people (namely the MLR and UK Evo scene in general) refer to non-traders as "geekm@ppers", go to the Skyline, S-body, drift or any other scene and you will never hear the term "geekm@pper".

Just my 2 pence worth.
