forging options

hi all

Right I have been getting a few bits together, and popped up to indigo last night and had a chat with Ant. Clearly their option does provide quality and pease of mind but its not going to be the cheapest option out there.

So basically I want to see what my other options are, if you got for a rod job, how much of a risk of anything second hand? If to buy a forged engine and then sell my stock motor. Or to bit the bullet and have it done properly and drop it off to Indigo :)

currenlty I have a rebuilt head running hks cams, new pulleys uprated springs, retainers. so really the big question is what to do about the bottom end. Not sure if to whip the head off check the condtion of the bores in my current motor, fit new head/ turbo and and get it mapped as Ant recommened then see about going down the forged route. Probably the best way to go currently as not to much expense and gives time so see about strenghting the bottom end.

what do you think??

Alright buddy!

Which model evo do u have? Mileage?
I'm currently forging my 5 so could fill u in on costs and wats involved machine work wise! I've got some parts from ant and some from Rossport! Doing the build myself and then it's over to indigo for mapping after the running in mileage!

hi mate

Be interested too see what your spending, and what spec, you boring the block? cost of parts is what it is and then all down to what I want to replace.. ground up rebuild/rod job. Not got the time or space to do all the work myself. Well not at present, but that would save a fair bit of money

seen the post about your build, didnt your cambelt go? mass damage?

Best to assume the worst block wise, that it would need to be re bored as it least then if it doesnt I would be better off ;) buying an already forged engine for the right money would probably be top of the list, save time and hassle, leave me with an engine and maybe another head to sell on.

Cheapest option is buy a forged bottom end that is already built and for sale with low mileage and you will just have to change the piston rings and have them gapped. Thats your cheapest option or buy forged rods, forged pistons, still need the rings gapped, head set, rebore and deck, cosworth head gasket, ARP head studs, ARP conrod bolts, have your crank polished and maybe needing reground, new timing belt, new oil pump, new hydraulic tensioner, balance shaft removal kit, having the bearings spun, engine assembled and engine fully balanced.

Cheers Phil.. Very helpful post :)

Basically buy another forged motor, could be worth doing if I can get one at a good price

There are many out there and if your on MLR there are a few for sale as complete lumps. Still a cheaper way to have a forged engine is buy one that has been already built and now for sale. Ask to hear it running before its removed or buy it with the understanding that if there are any issues with it you want a full refund plus cost for fitting and removal. If its ok and has 4 or 5k miles or has been to the track a few times i you will need a new set of piston rings and the rings gapped, a head set, a competition head gasket and your sorted. I have seen 3 or 4 fully forged engines on mLR for sale very cheap. Alot cheaper for the complete fully engine than would let you build a fully forged bottom end mate.
