Hi all,

I purchased myself an evo 4 a couple of months ago and it is now showing serious signs of crankwalk. Everywhere I have read it is suggested that the best fix for this is to replace the bottom end with an e5/e6 bottom end. Is there anyone else unfortunate enough to have suffered from this and how did you go about righting the bottom end?

Anyway apart from that I really like the evo. I’d always wanted an evo 4 and one came up cheap so the idea was to have a play then break it for parts and make a bit of doller. But apart from the engine, everything else about the car is spot on and I am feeling that I should try and fix the bottom end stop another evo 4 going to its grave.

If anyone has got any information on how to fix the e4 bottom end or where I can find an alternative engine I would be very appreciative.

Thanks
Ozzie

Just one thing. The later the engine you get the better. The 5 engine is better but later ones are better still :)

Fit newer and forget :)

Don't be tempted to buy a rebuilt 4 engine neither as the fault is with the block :)

hi
as already said probably better find a newer bottom end / engine ,as even fitting a new crank and bearings is only gonna really be a tempary fix as other damage may have been done to the block :O(

also compare the cost for the work involved and peace of mind :O)

This is not correct as the blocks are the same and heads also until you get to the E9 but the block is still the same. Only need to get yourself a E5-9 block and fit your E4 head although a complete E5-8 engine would be ideal and an E5/6 ecu also for you.

It is a total waste of money to rebuild any E4 bottom end as they have issues with the main and small end bearings and will always suffer from crank walk issues and this is why mittsubisi realised this and redesigned the E4 block for the launch of new and improved E5 which stayed the same until the E8.
You are looking at the paying in the region of £1500-2000 for any E5-8 engine with the turbo and for an E5/6 ECU. An E5-9 block and an E5/6 Ecu and Turbo would let you away using your own E4 head and be in the region of £1000-1450 but you will need a head gasket set also at £230-£275.

So, can you rod job an evo 5 engine or are the pistons a problem ;)

hi all. im new to this forum as you can probably tell by my lack of posts. just reading up on evo's as ive been given permission by the other half that im allowed a new toy :D. i know nothing about evos really since i was bought up around fords. basically i was looking for an evo 4 to buy but now i've read about this crankwalk are they all really potential money buckets and worth just getting a 5? theres one on ebay atm that i've emailed the bloke about. its had 5 owners in 5 years since it was bought to england. is this normal for these cars or do you lot think it has a problem and people are just covering it up and flogging it on? any help would be appreciated. oh and the crank pressurizing, this is only an issue when you raise the boost isnt it? i thought it was caused by blow-by?
