I had the same problem on an astra 2.2 Sri, would go into safe mode and was a nightmare, found the problem was a dodgy senser wire, when cold was fine would rev nice and soon as it warmed up, ie rubber on the wire become softer, all hell would break loose was not showing on the ecu or ecu light not showing either. I had a mate who told me to get someone to rev the car as i went around the engine bay wiggling wires, and thats how i found the fault, worth a try buddy ;)

As you say the problem gets worse as the engine gets warm have you tried changing the engine temp sensor as with the engine being cold it can handle the extra fueling it will be putting in but if the cold temp sensor is telling the ECU it is still cold when its hot the ECU will be injecting to much fuel nd could be stifeling the engine. Does it smell rich when its running when warm at all and have you had it on an emmitions machine you will find one at all MOT test bays that can be a handy tool for helping to check the engine in regards to overfueling

Im not familiar yet with how the Evo management system would respond to cold temp sensor disconnected but on all the other turbo charged cars i have had when the temp sensor is disconnected the ECU will revert to a base fueling map and would put the cooling fans on

I've just had to question myself and on another forum about whether or not the fans should kick in if you remove the plug to the CTS, as i need to know for my car too as the fans are on a manual switch and i want it auto :)
