Do I need a better intercooler than stock 4 FMIC to run an evo 8 turbo on a 4?

hi buddy

i think you should be ok with the standard one unless your running silly power and high boost ,

what are your power plans ,boost ect ??? use of the car road/race ??

have been told that the later e7,e8, cooler is bigger and good for 400bhp + and fits straight on :O)

but try not to go to big like i did or you could lose power :O(

I've got somewhere between 330 and 350BHP and I'm boosting 20lbs on the evo 4 turbo. I am not looking for any specific powerlevel, just more. I still want to boost about the same with the 8 turbo. I race a lot on the track but also like to open it up on the road and in the mountains.

To be honest mate. The 4 engine won't take much more boost than your running already. Its none to suffer from ringland failure and crank walk. Its recommendedby many to only run 1.2/1.3 bar boost

Amd pushing 350bhp on a 4 engine is unlikely to :(

i beg to differ on that one, mines 350 and has been boosting at 1.5 bar and over all day long, :D

I am not putting a evo 8 turbo on to run more psi. the 8 and 9 turbos have same housing as the rest put compress more than the lower turbos. I will still run 20 lbs with the 8 turbo but that 20 lbs is more boost than 20 lbs from a 4 turbo. The evo 4 turbo can boost well over 20 lbs, my internals can't, so putting a same size turbo in and boosting the same will give me more boost if that makes sense to you.

20 lbs of boost is 20 lbs of boost from whatever turbo you use
The differing size and design of turbo will give different limits of boost if running same settings and different characteristics of how the boost comes on
The 9 turbo has a different compressor housing to an 8. Its bigger...
The 9 also runs a 10.5 hotside. 8 runs a 9.8 hotside except the 8mr

i think what your trying to put across is that your wanting to run the same boost 20lb - 1.4 bar ish but on a bigger turbo meaning that for the same boost your hoping to push more volume in to the engine ??

but that usualy has the same effect as turning up the boost ?? more power ,dose it not ??

so to keep to your same power level you may have to lower the boost to keep the engine to your safe level ??

am i right in thinking that it not just a question of how much boost you push in to the engine that will kill it its the amount of power that is produced from that boost level that will

any one ....

Basically yes... The op wants to fit a new turbo and run the same boost. So he'll have to reduce the settings to run the same boost on a bigger better turbo :)

whats your plan now then?
new engine or rebuild that one,
ive 2 forged engines here:D one in car which is comin out and maybe forsale only done track miles really running 1.9/2.1 bar, could maybe do with a new set of rings and a hone, but runs very strong, been in about 3 years,

its 0.5 bored, 5 block, balance shafts removed manly pistons and rings all ARP head studs, bottom end built and machined by wards of rugby(drag engine specilist) MR head gasket, head got piper uprated valve springs would come with E7 cams as the ones init i need, probally would want around the 2k mark for it,
if my plans change then other would be around 2.5k E7 block scat rods and wisco pistons iirc but would confirm first also balance shafts removed, standard size bores done 2k since rebuild,
but nothing till new year as gotta see what were doing maybe changeing from evos to clios if so then everything will be sold...

Here is a reference as to what I was saying. I do not want a larger turbo, as I would need all new piping. On the chart the evo 4 has a td05 16g, same with evo 8, both of which are 68mm exducer. The 9 also has a 68mm exducer. All are the same size, however some have more flow. On paper the figures seem to even out since they are both 16g's. However, when all aspects are taken into account on car, the 8 will give a measurable gain. The 8 has a bigger hotside than 4, and a better turbine.
