ef-ing balance shafts

Back in the garage tomorrow, got a vibration in the rev range above 4k when accelerating or decelerating, think I'm a tooth out on the right hand balance shaft, was sure I had it spot on but obviously not:mad:

Rant over :shock:

When you line it up, spin the shaft. It will want to settle in almost exact position... You tube it

Cheers for the imput guys, I've been sat in the bath pondering and come to the conclusion that;

A) the crankshaft cannot be 360 out as thats one full turn putting everything back where it was in the first place, if it was 180 out then it would be trying to fire on the induction stroke so wouldn't run at all.

B) the lefthand balance belt must surely be aligned as it makes the same amount of rotations as the crank and those timing marks I'm positive lined up correctly and was tensioned to give the 5-7mm deflection stated in the manual.

Therefore it must be the right hand balance shaft a tooth or half a tooth out. I was struggling over the pit trying to hold the exhaust cam in position while holding the belt on at the same time as trying to feed the belt round the idler, oil pump sprocket and crankshaft so it surely must be my problem.

Better get my screwdriver out tomorrow :D

It wasnt a dig, but surely the crank cant be 360 out. Unless you know something I dont:confused:

Where would the position of the cams be? And you'd be firing on number four instead of number one but in reality it's more to do with the balancer being out of phase with the firing order ;-)

The cams would be 180 out, but then it wouldnt run surely, it'd be trying to back fire up through the inlet

The term 360 out I'd say refers to the pully it runs off as.
Easiest way to find out is to time everything up then as Nath said, remove the short bolt that's in the block behind the turbo. Insert a screw driver. Should go in a couple inches, if it doesn't then the shaft itself is 180 out and you'll need to rotate its pully 360 degrees to correct it :)

Cheers B6lee, that makes sense now lol! I've got the garage to myself tonight so come 5.30 the fun begins again! :D
