Big thank you to everyone on here that has helped me so far.

You will be pleased to know that I have decided to now go for the V instead of the IV due to the engine.

I was just wondering if people could help me in what I specifically need to look for when buying one. I do know the basics of what to look for when buying (ie compression test, turbo smoke, engine rattles etc) just after the expert advice really.

Or, if anyone knows of a nice white V for sale that hasn't been heavily modified, that would be even better.

Thanks again guys!!!

You've Sussed the obvious stuff

For me I'd be looking for rust underneath, holes etc and I think the chassis legs are quite prone for rotting away.

Ideally you should look for someone's "summer car" that hasn't seen much of our winters.

Be careful of freshly under sealed cars, sometimes this is done to cover problems.

Another lad on here has his heart set on a white V and its proved very difficult to find one.

I bought mine on condition over anything, then the right mods I was after. Colour wasn't a factor hence how I ended up with the Colour I said I would never buy again after owning a black golf

Well there are quite a few for sale at the moment and I will start looking soon. Do you know what the compression readings should be?

I think around 150psi is a good pressure

and if they arent even then your looking for figures within 10 psi of eachother.

As above mate, 160 ish psi and all within 5 percent of each other as a general rule.
