Yep, failing that there is a bolt in the side if the block that doesn't appear to do anything. It's in the turbo area it is just a bolt that doesn't hold anything on.

Remove it an insert a screw driver in the hole and if it only goes in a few mill then the balance shaft is wrong. Rotate shaft until screwdriver goes in a couple inches.

Yh I have found both those videos it's how I'm sure it's my balance shaft as that's the noise I have, the second video I have seen, although it explains that it falls where it wants is it me or does it fall somewhere different each time..... My dad who fitted the belt says he used the manufacturers timing marks, he said he marked it when. It came off but marks got removed with all the fiddling about

The timing marks are there anyway and don't rub off.

Yh the marks he made rubbed off and he didn't notice if the differed to the timing marks, because as in that video he says the marks arnt nessesarily te best to use

The original marks are there for a reason and you say your dad did his own, yet he done the balance shaft wrong

My noise is the same as the video above which leads to balance shaft, but he is adamant he lined up the marks set my Mitsubishi so best bet is to pull off the timing chest and check it out

Yes but as you can see in the video above just cos the mark lines up doesn't mean it's right. The shaft is weighted and it also runs off a gear not directly on the back of the pully. Watch the second video again
