Another clutch change post

Not actually had a real look yet but with the bank holiday weekend was thinking it would be a good time to drop in the new clutch and flywheel..only turned up this week and not checked out the best way to do it..Not actually got any fluids yet so not well prepped but Japfest next weekend.

Had a look at the evo performance guide, and looked thought some pld posts of other dropping the box..removed a good few 4wd drive boxes but the push on drive shafts seem to be a hassle as they slide onto the shaft so:

Has anyone dropped the box off with the transfer still attached? Or will I have to get a slide hammer?

Also the ayc. The guide says nothing about this but it's cropped up on some posts, not looked but does this have to be removed? If so there a bleed procedure? Asking questions before I really look so probably stupid :whistling:

Time frame wise should be possible in a day? Gt4 clutch was, then again could drop the motor complete and do it that way in a day by the time I got rid of it, it had been out enough lol

And if anyone is around south Wales and fancies giving a hand many hands make light work!

what evo do you have as the 456 are slightly different to the 789 having ayc fluid :O)

i would remove the transbox befor dropping but i have only ever done the clutch on my e4 :O)

easly done in a day or a morning on a 2 post ramp :O)

and using the slide hammer is no big deal and the shafts should just leaver off . the release bearing can be a pig to release tho :O(

Cheers mate, will have to see if I can get a slide hammer on the Saturday before I get underway.

No use of ramps either unless I can worm my way into where one of my mates works, will have to see tomorrow

done my clutch a month ago, the transfer box will have to come off, ill be honest space is very scarce, you wll need a slide hammer for the input shaft and the driveshafts do just pop off they not tricky.

make sure you disengage the release bearing before undoing the bell housing.

if your doing this on a drive make sure you have a second pair of hands for puttin the box back on. and watch out that the spline dnt knock the stupid clip or its box back off and clutch just to reattatch

dont be put off by the 4x4 status my cavalier turbo 4x4 was so much harder to do that the evo and you dont want to even think about doing a sunny gtir on the side of the road :O)

just take your time read the manual and print off the torque settings :O)

ill b honest i said next time i gotta do a clutch im droppin the subframe, ill have it done that way in a day and makes gettin to everythin much easier

Heard there isn't much room tomget the box off, extra jack to suppor the motor once the north south bar is off... Yeah i know about the release beating having to be popped from the clutch, don't think much of that idea either haha...Can see getting it back together being a pain as well

Only other issue is the ayc?

Got no issues about it being a 4wd other than the smell of gearbox oil and the fat it takes forever to get off.. I think at one point I had the gearbox out my gt4 3 times in a month, but I used to drop the engine and could do its with my eyes closed.. Doing it on the car will be a pain plus got to get the slide hammer and fluids, only thing I wasn't sure of was the ayc.

Craig you left the subframe in place? Not much room with that still in!

Lol.. No issues with pulling stuff apart, got to have left over nuts and bolts too ;-) totally rebuilt my old car..just thought would get some extra info first. Will check out those Mitsubishi guides..torque setting is ft ;-) do have to remember that, first time I fitted the cusco clutch to my old car it wasn't tight enough on the cover plate, so two weeks in it just slipped and had no drive lol..fail..

the ayc is easy. ignition on then push excelerator to floor. youll hear the pump buzz. just repeat a few times and you should be sorted

That simple!? Lol.. Will ring ant tomorrow see about fluid for the ayc.. Maybe a few places close to me that may sell similar though

Yh none of the how to guides said about lowering subframe so I didn't, got it all out but ended up undoing the last engine mount and lowering the block to get it all back together.

Ayc is simples as lee said you will be surprised how simple it is for summat some garages charge a fortune for just make sure the car is level.

You will need a couple of jacks I would say one for the block and the other for the box

Yeah just been looking at a how too, will have use of a few tonne winch, engine crane and a few jacks I think, winch is awesome great for lifting cars up to side engines out ;-) can see lining the box back up to be an issue, either a 5 minute or 5 hours from past experience, althought the evo box you can see more of what is happening..has to be done so will have to crack on

True garages do want too much for doing it

Cheapest quote I got was 200 from mr clutch but decided no when I read reviews about some of the monkeys workin there, next best quote was 280 but he wanted the car for nearly a week as he said he would do it cheap if he didn't have to rush which was fair nough, saved it all in the end and sweated it out myself, you will be fine mate, took me n my dad 2 hours to line the box up n back on in the end

That's not bad.. Had £500 to do the box on my gt4 and that was years ago, well 5 infact!!

Cheers mate...Yeah know it will be ok not the first time. hopefully get some help with it..though could do it by myself just be longer and a real pain with fit the box back on, 2 hours isn't bad, how long did it take you in total to do the job?

we did my mates on his 5 and it took us about 5hrs good going that but helps when you dont have to keep getting out from under the car when you need tools

That's some good going Lee, can see it taking longer than that, and much as would be better to have more time on it got to get it done ASAP, it's slipping and makes some good noises pulling off at times lol..

Output shafts still in and no slide hammer in site so we made one using a length of threaded bar and the head off a lump hammer. By 2:00 the box was out And I sent him off for pizza while I looked at a mates car. 2:30 ish we re started and 4:30 he drove it out the unit

All done on the floor

Haha that is a good effort lee.. Take it that it wasn't done on ramps? Althought it didnt tkae you long to get it in and out, Easy enough getting the box back on and on? Liking the slide hammer dodge. Cant fault the break and pizza

I do need to pick up some gearbox oil

Also waiting on to see who I can get to give a hand, a solo mission would be a nightmare..

Yea mate just sat the car on axle stands and used 2 jacks, 1 for engine and one for the box.
When I did mine I was on my own and bored of it and it took me 2-3 days I think. Box was a right biatch to get on even with 3 of us. But when we done my mates just 2 of us and the box just kinda fell back into place. It's one of those jobs really that can go either way.
If you were more local I'd lend a hand but I haven't the time anyway
