ABS toothed ring

I'm sure someone will want to know this information at some time....

The Evo IV is common to have an ABS ring brake/fail.
These toothed rings are called, Reluctor rings, also know as target ring, sensor ring, Tone ring.

Rust builds up behid the ring, and brakes. Or, in my case, the car has had a knock.

The Evo IV has a rear reluctor ring size of...
68mm inner, 78mm outer, 7mm thickness, with 43 teeth.
(when in good condition)

To replace this reluctor ring, all you need do is, carefully pry off the dirt shield infront of the ring, and then pry off the ring its self. Do the slowly and carefully, as they're only cast. This can be used as a sacrificial drift for the replacement.

The new versions for almost all cars are easily found, from £10 to £45.
However the Evo IV doesn't seem very available!!
Most say, the only replacement is a complete new shaft!!!:disgusted:
Or replacement CV joint kit.:wtf:
Used shafts are available, however not as easy done as said!!
Due to some incompident courriers, who manage to somehow, loose the shaft from the packaging, and say they'll re-package, and attemt delivery again, after 1 week!!
I wish I'd driven the 1 hour 45 minute journey to collect now.

So, if you can find someone who has a damaged shaft, or worn CV joint, they may carefully remove the reluctor ring for you??:whistling:

If I do find a new reluctor ring to the above dimensions, i'll let you know.

By the way, does anyone have a used damaged shaft, or a worn CV joint, they could pry off the Reluctor Ring, and post for me at a small cost? lol

Hope this helps someone out in the future, if they're unfortunate enough to encounter this problem.

Did Jamie not have one then???

El

I've been offered a wheel bearing? Also someone kindly offered a used CV joint El.
I just thought, the price of the CV joint was a little high, when all I need is the daft reluctor ring. lol

So far, no-one has found/offered just the reluctor ring mate.

I'm going to search for another car which has the same size ring, or just order one from China.
The only problem is, there's not many who advertise the dimentions of them.

If you do find a manufacturer or supplier that has them, all you need to do is contact them and ask for the dimensions buddy.

As for the supplier in China, pay by PayPal only as they have a knack for promising that their products are up to the task but when you receive them and discover that they are not, they tend to give you the run around.

Let me know how you get on and if you do manage to source one and find that it is up to the task, I will order in a bunch of them so that members have an option available if they find that they are in the same boat as you are! ;)

Thanks El, I'll see if one of the suppliers in the UK will give me the details.
I've found one supplier in the UK that do the reluctor ring for an evo IV, however it doesn't state front or rear!
Also they want £45! Where others are not as expensive.

Hi folks, just to let you know,
It's posible to mig weld the reluctor ring and re-cut the teeth, especially if you have another to copy.
Alternatively make a good copy on paper to use as a guide, to enable the correct spacing and size of teeth, as I did, also I used to rotate on the template, to ensure equal size and height.:)
You may/maynot perhaps see from the pictures, I welded a strip before re-cutting all 5 missing teeth, with a hack saw, and using a small file.

Fitted, and working, without the ABS light coming on!!
Well happy.:)

Hi guys,

Just had a heads up on this thread...

I am Matt from UK Parts Direct - Technical Sales manager. Would seem this is becoming a common problem on the EVO's. We do not stock these at the moment, but would be happy to develop this part to help you guys out if there is demand. I can have 50 on the shelf in under a month. These would retail at a around a quarter of the price of the supplier mentioned above.

Be interesting to get some feedback on this product from you guys....

Hi Matt.

Why don't you go ahead and get a sample cut and send it to me for inspection along with details of it's composition.

If the price is right then you may well sell quite a few of them.

Hi El,

Good to hear from you...feedback is always appreciated

Please send over an email to sales@ukpartsdirect.com with your full details and I will get the ball rolling at this end. £45 is ludicrous for this part, we can definately help you guys out here......

Do you know if there are other size rings (front or rear) across the EVO range? I was told the rear on the EVO IV/V/VI is the same as the front on the EVO VII/VIII. I would just like to make sure we have all bases covered across the whole EVO range

Thanks again

That's worth a look, for that sort of money wouldn't mind trying to replace the abs rings

Cheers mate...

right the £1.90 abs rings from ebay will only fit the front cv joints :O( the rear abs rings are thinner walled " bigger internal diameter "

i know i tried today , so i will have to order 2 from uk parts as above .

but the fronts needed doing any way so no loss :O)
