Oil spraying out of dipstick after timing belt install

Hi all just bought an evo 4, ran it for a few days then I did the timing belt.

Before doing timing belt the car ran 100% but after doing timing belt the car seems slower, sounds different, and it is doing the "common dipstick problem" I double checked the cam timing, they line up to the marks on valve cover at TDC, checked PCV valve and a compression test reads 6 bar over all 4 cylinders. i noticed oil in the tubes where the spark plugs go too.

Seems strange how its only done these symptoms after replacing belt?

thanks

p.s. aparently its an evo 6 engine, I can't read the numbers on the block for rust.

Seems strange. Showing signs of crank case pressure but as you said compression seems fine.

Definitely strange, its definitely not as powerful, and definitely sounds different, only since doing belt :wtf:

Yeah, double checked timing with belt tight etc, everything was in line.

Not really sure what's wrong mate. I'd say check the timing but you have said you have done that.
Something must have gone back together wrong. Did you time it up before taking the belt off ?

Yeah, got its TDC marked everyrhing up with tip ex. How ever, I do recall the oil pump being around 90 degrees out when everything else was lined up. I lined this up when fitting belt, turned the engine and noticed it never lined back up again, it was where I first found it around 90 degrees out, so I did another full turn of the engine and it lined up. Do you think I have the oil pump timing out?

Possibly yea. At the end of the day it has a timing mark so yea best to line it all up first then remove the belt. It is also possible for the balance shafts to be 180 out if your not careful.

The car runs smooth with no misfire or lumpy idle etc. If the balance shaft was 180 degree out wouldn't I feel vibration? I daren't drive the car anymore, and daren't try hold the dipstick in with something, whats worrying me most is the engine sounds different under power and it definitely lost power at first. I cleaned engine bay an went out again to see if it was a one off, and it did it again as soon as I put foot down.

Strange cos you wouldn't of had to touch any of the vacuum pipes in order to do the job.
I know having done a couple Evo cambelts they are a bit of a mare but don't understand how you could have developed such problems.

I had a serious mare with this one, lol! So lets presume the oil pump is out of time, but everything else is in time (the other small belt driven balance shaft was in line when the oil pump wasn't :S) But yeah lets say oil pump out of timing, what will this do? Remember my engine sounds different too (as if I have a different exhaust) I am baffled.

well..

do you have the special tool to release the tension on the tensioner rod?

if so..do as below..if not, tough luck..follow steps below

install it ,release tension, zip tie the belts to the cam gears (or remove tensioner, reset)

then slip belt off crank and reset the oil pump.

grab the oil pump sprocket, turn it to 12 o clock, then let it go.. it should fall towards the match mark.. if it falls away, rotate it again and try again(will be spot on then)

**if u think this is hard, the same task on an earlier 4g63 was way harder, you had 3 v belts to remove, ac bracket and motor mount was a PITA

I removed plugs, got number 1 piston to TDC and both marks on pulleys line up to marks on cam cover. Are they floating pulleys?

floating pulleys? no,theres a guide pin in the cams, they should be pointing upwards too(the dowel pins allow the pulleys to be fitted one way only))

It wasn't too hard, because I had someone to help me. But I've managed belts before with ease on other cars.

Do you think this could be my problem then? I can take tension back off so might have to re do it.

Ok so thats confirmed that. cam timing is perfect then

Raph, I think my oil pump timing will be out, it must be because when I took the belt off it wasn't lined up but everything else was. I didn't realise I had to go another turn or two with the crank pulley to line the oil pump up. So could this be my problem? But how could it possibly make the car sound different? hmmm could I have over tightened the belt?

No they are not floating pullies.

Did you re set the tensioner in a vice and pin it ? Then release pin once belt tensioned ?
