ported standard inlet manifold

as i recently purchased a new S90 70mm throttle body i thought that as it has a much larger internal diameter then the inlet mani should be opened up to match.
only issue with doing this is that there isnt quite enough metal all the way around the port so certain areas need to be built up first and as there are a couple areas where once the port has been enlarged the metal will be very very thin so it was decided welding would be required around the whole circumfrence of the port.

time taken by my local race engine specialist to do the welding and the porting 5hrs

time taken by myself to grind back any excess weld and sand and smooth down to a more factory finish (external only) 4hrs

you may remember i painted my inlet white, we its been in the acid to remove it all so as not to cause problems when welding but will be powder coated back to white again this week as will my discollureing rocker cover.

what with the cost of fuel to get there plus x amount of hours to to do the job. no no no money is tight so its going to be powder coated as i can get that done for next to nothing through work so wont even have to deliver or collect it. work will do all that when they take other stuff to be done

good advice

i have a friend that owns a company called forestheath engineering " helped with my cv joint convertion "

i have a idea of what the finished manifold will come out like but he will put me right if i go astry .

the porting side of things i can do and enjoy doing .

i will probably leave the weld and not blend it in on the out side as i like the " look of that kind of thing " as im not one for show and the manifold will probably end up matt black to the descust of my work mates :O)

mine had so much weld put into it it was better i beveled and smothed it off as thats the way i like it

building on a budget buying parts cheap when they come up , its the only way i can do it :O)

the version 3 write up is a good read and is impressive for a otherwise standard manifold :O)

hi guys

just thought i would pop this on here as i thought it fitted in nicley with the rest of the thread .

seeing as my manifold is also off at the moment and i am still undecided as to which direction i am going whether to follow b6lee's excellent example here or find a cheap aftermarket manifold

i thought a would see how well the standard manifold matched up with the standard ports on the head

so i made rough a template of the flange of the manifold from some clear plastic sheet fixed it to the head at 2 points one each end , making the bolt holes a very tight fit so the sheet cant move around " very important "


then like in the old days of making card gaskets , i taped around the ports with a small hammer to leave a impression on the clear plastic sheet

then removed from the car and cut out . finaly checking and trimming on the car with a stanley blade , putting some cloth down the port first so no smegg goes down :O)

i have painted the sheet / template black to make it easier to see the differance between the head and manifold .

it seems they are very well matched as standard but also that there is room for improvement "

as apparently the idea it to match them dont port the manifold any bigger than this or it will make it flow worst it is better for the ports in the mainfold to be smaller than the head rather than the other way round


as this is a template of the head it can be used on what ever manifold i decide to use not just the standard one :O)

i also layed it over my thermal gasket and found that the gasket actually

needs trimming as it is sticks in to the bottom of each the ports .

not easy to see when on the car :O(

And to compliment my 3" throttle body and as my cooler has 3" outlet it made sense the have 3" hardpipe to link the 2 together
