Rear Number Plate Fixing (8MR FQ)

Hi guys, bit of a strange one i guess.

When i bought my 8MR FQ320 it had, for some unknown reason, a square import style rear number plate fitted to it. First job once i'd bought the car was to replace it with a UK style rear plate...to fit the UK size plate aperture. I noticed when fitting it that the existing metal plate fitting bracket, i assume the original bracket as fitted to the 8 GSR prior to the FQ UK conversion process, actually sticks out past the face of the rear bumper plate aperture which means you cant stick the plate flush onto the rear bumper in the plate space. I ended up 'building out' either end of the plate with layers of foam adhesive tape so that the plate wasn't curved, and sat flat in the aperture. Anyway's, the plate has finally fallen off after 18months, so i wondered if there's a UK plate mounting bracket that screws into the existing metal bracket, that either holds the plate, or has a flat mounting plate allowing you to stick the UK plate to a flat surface. I'm sure i've noticed some kind of mounting plate 'lugs' in some pictures i've seen on other FQ cars in the past in pic's posted on here, but can't seem to find any examples when i searched, for this post? I want to stick the plate on as i really don't like the unsightly plastic screw heads sometimes used to fix plates.

Alternatively, if others have experienced the same issue when mounting rear number plates, how did you get over it ? I figure if i'm replacing the plate, i'll make this the last time and do it properly !!

I dunno on this one as my plate just sticks directly onto the bumperedit to add mine is a 9 though is there any difference

Not sure Nick to be honest. I'd imagine the same bracket is on bothe the 8 and 9 as body wise, it's only really the bumpers that are different. Perhaps the bumper on the 9 is slightly bigger giving better clearance...unless Mitsubishi UK had it removed in the conversion process on the 9? Thanks for the feedback mate

Well the VII has the same rear bumper and I removed the bracket that the square plate was attached to and just stuck my plate to the bumper with some 2mm double sided tape but no need to layer it up.

No it don't last forever but I rather stick plates on anyway cos I don't. Like seeing screws

Must have done away with it completely on the 9 then I guess

Yep definately nothing of the sort on a 9 just some number plate lights attached to some rusty old tin up under the bumper skin

I suggest if your number plate lights are not attached to it then get rid of the holder and tape straight to the skin

I was thinking that Nick, but didn't really want to start cutting bits off if there's a holder that just bolts onto that bracket to take the plate. There must be an official Mitsi solution unless the literally stick them on from the dealerships as I did the last plate

Every evo 7 8 and 9 I have seen just go to the skin So maybe yours slipped through the net. What holds the bit you have there on?

It's welded on. I've looked at alot of pics of 8 rears in cars for sale, and they all (bar Lee's above) if you look closely, the plates are all sat off the bumper...I'd assume do to this mount. I'll post some examples...brb.

Another view for you but I can assure you all I did was remove the lower bracket that held the square plate
