Need serious help.

First hi to everyone and thanks for taking the time to read.

Ok I have recently bought a 2005 Evo 9 FQ340 mr and it seems its abit slapped together.

after a couple drives I noticed it had a serious misfire under load. So of course I changed the plugs, only to find what I thought was evo 8 plugs in there. Swapped them for longer evo 9 plugs ngk ILFR7H's, this sorted the miss under load but not at idel.



I just seen other evo 9 engines and iv'e noticed I don't have a 9 mivec rocker cover. Then after inspecting the engine model code found on the block I think it's from a 6 but not sure.



So I'm lost as to what plugs I need and no clue what hp it's running or what mileage,

I'm gutted and would like to know what engine it is and what spark plugs to put in.

Don't fit them plugs what ever you do. Get the enging number and ring a reputable Evo garage in your ares. Them plugs may be too long for your car and could do some damage. Where you live ?

Does the cam pulley have the adjuster on it or are they both the same? What did the hpi say the car was?

What did the logbook say and did all the vin ect match ?

Cheers for the reply, well I have been driving with them and had no issues really. They are definitely not hitting the pistons at least.

yeah A is a evo 6 engine! if you can shine a small touch down one of the bores,it mite have had a engine fail so someone forged a 6 engine,as you know it's a 6 i would put the plugs recommend for a 6 in mate.

Thanks for confirming this, how would I check if its been forged. Could the head be a 8, or do you think they changed the rocker cover.

im not sure about the head,you could take the rocker cover off and see what cams are in there,checking the pistons from the top is hit and miss but sometimes you can as some have numbers on the top,so you mite be able to identify them by googling the numbers.

I can't remember still waiting for it but I'm 90% sure it said ix. yes the vins all matched under the bonnet, windows every where.

just really need to know if its a 9 or not I'm lost.

the hpi only listed it as a mitsubishi evo..

Hi, yes I've established that due to the rocker cover. What I'd love to know is if it's a 6,7 or 8 head for the correct spark plugs.

Did the previous owner not mention it as you could of potentially bought a headache mate

It's sad when you see these things where people get caught out.

No not at all, I'm going to sell it asap. I've had to put 100s into it already.
Found two of the wheels are cracked, the battery needed replacing, spent loads on plugs coil packs etc the rocker cover was leaking.
When he took me for a test drive there was heat coming out the vents, only to find later they don't work and I need a blower motor as well.
turning into a money pit to top it off its got a misfire that I can't trace. It's got a 6 engine and have no clue if its a viii or a ix let alone a fq 340.
It also sounds like a diesel and has a ticking along with it on a cold start.

I literally can't sleep at night thinking it's gunna go pop next time I drive it.

i don't think the heads changed till evo 9,i thought 4-8 were the same but are wait and let someone else answer that for sure,thinking about it i know people use evo 8 mr cams in 4 5 6 7 so they must be the same.

If you've ever had a moment when your all happy then suddenly the penny drops. Well for me looking a another evo 9 rocker cover and being told they dont fit a 8/7/6 evo wiped the smile off my face and opened a can of worms.

its more than likely a 7 or 8 dressed as a 9 evo. It must have had the ecu changed otherwise as the 9 ecu won't run a non-mivec engine. Best to get the vin number and phone mitsi to find out for sure.

Heres the engine code for it on the hpi check. 4G63 KK5580 I think it's for a viii. First Registered 29 Jun 2005

You sure it's not an 8 dressed as a 9 ? as that would also explain the incorrect engine fitted but correct for an 8 dressed as a 9. Does the speedo on right say Lancer or Evolution ?
