Odd caliper problem.

I've just had an odd thing happen to my lancer, the rear drivers side brake pads wore down to nothing in less than two months. I had not noticed that corner being hot but since replacing the pads i have noticed that it is much hotter than the other three.
Now, the odd thing is, i've taken it all apart and i can't find anything wrong.
The slider pins are free and slide perfectly, and when i used my windback tool the piston moved freely and easily as i would expect from a caliper working properly. Jacking the car up and spinning that wheel shows its spinning freely too.

I can't think of anything that would cause the pads to wear down or that corner being very hot.
Any ideas guys?

Could be a brake hose. Did the pads come out ok and wernt seized into the caliper? If not change the brake flexi hose and that should cure it.

If you have brembos you dont. Undo brake fluid resevoir cap n slowly prise each one back at a time being careful of the seals. Do it gently n work each one and theyl both go back.

Ahh ok, the pipe is not something i had considered or indeed look at at all. How would a dodgy pipe cause the pads to wear down so quick though?

The pads came out fine, i only changed the discs and pads around two months ago, so seeing the pads on one side completely gone is worrying.

Now i just need to find a new hose, its a 09 lancer di-d, any idea where to get one apart from a main dealer?

Craige201, i bought one from halfords for about £12.

If a pipe gets blocked from the internals breaking down itl act like a one way valve and keep the fluid pressure at the caliper end so the pistons wont retract properly causing binding. Not sure mate but main dealers or motor factors are your best options

Without looking at it id say its your handbrake cable, either over adjusted or seizing. Handbrake is on the caliper as you needed the windback tool, sliders are free as you say, newish disks and pads which were removed and fitted easily, very very much doubt that your internals would be blocked.

Which pad is worse? Inner or outer?

The handbrake is separate, the handbrake operates the drum brake and has nothing to do with the calipers.
The handbrake is adjusted properly, its not active when going along so obviously there will be no usage.

So what did you need the windback tool for?

Could be a faulty brake hose then ;) get a friend to sit in car and pump pedal and work it back n forth to make sure pistons move freely. Upgrade to braided hose kit could be worthwhile if you plan on keeping the car a while.

The caliper, to put in new pads.

The pads i took out were worn the same each side of the disc. My nearest dealer is over an hour away so ill pop in to a motor factor to get a new pipe.

Let us know how things go. As we said its an 09 and ive never known it to happen so soon but funnier things have happened and anything can happen at any stage on a car. Good luck mate and hope it solves your problem.

you shouldnt really force old fluid backwards in the system can cause damage to master cylinder ,proper practice is to clamp flexi then undo bleed nipple and then push the piston back in remembering to fit a pipe to the open nipple to catch the fluid,

Ok so i got around to changing the two pipes on the rear drivers side and a lot more brake fluid leaked out than i was expecting lol. I overbled that one corner just in case and so far the brake temperature is the same as the other side which is good news and all is normal.
I think ill need to bleed the whole car as its got a very slight sponge feeling, its hardly noticable but ill do that when its not raining.. in 2 months.

Cheers for the help guys.

Your calipers are seizing. Changing the brake lines will do nothing to help. You will need to remove the calliper, strip it, clean it then put it back together. It'll probably be a piston stuck.

As for the 'best practice' advise, yes it's probably just as easy, but it will not harm the master cylinder due to the nature in how the piston inside it works.

Yeh i'm thinking its the piston, It worked perfectly for roughly 7 weeks after fitting the new pipes and the pads were fine on friday when i checked them. Car felt a bit sluggish on sunday morning back from work and i saw the pads and nearly fell over.

i've tried sourcing a new caliper but that seems next to impossible. I need to replace/fix the problem before wednesday as i have a 11 night nightshift stint and i do 100 miles per shift :/
