depending on you engine turbo configuration a 3" system can make you car more laggy as it has a larger volume to fill, the 2.3" will suit most cars. Do you have just the standard pipe work at the moment? if so you'll probably only see the gains from changing the lower turbo to intercooler as this it narrow.

You'll see it will help with spooling but in terms of overall power gained it would be minimal.

What sort of power can you put through a 2" system before you need a bigger set of pipes ?

I'm running 550bhp with issues and would go to at least 650

So you have a 2" system and are running 550bhp and you could go to 650bhp before you would need to swap to larger pipe work ?

what you really need to look at is the diameter of the turbo outlet, intercooler inlet/outlet and throttle body as all of these will have an effect as it the throttle body is only 65mm then there's no point in in having larger pipe work because of the restriction. THe turbo outlet is generally a good measurement to go off because going too large will cause the air to move slower and decrease in pressure, making the turbo work harder to fill the space causing more lag, having a similar outlet size would keep the air flowing at the same speed etc.

I totally agree!

If it's bigger than the throttle, it's mostly for show. Unless there's a huge turbo creating a vast supply of pressure that's just waiting to go through....

That said, IMO, people go big for some crazy reason, mostly because it's what someone else has done.

Bigger pipes and a bigger intercooler equates to much higher duty cycles on your stock turbo. It will inevitably pack up sooner rather than later.
