Not all cars that are on V-car are bad news, sometimes they can be a bargain. They just want a good looking over by someone who knows what they're looking at and pre accident pictures are always good to see the extent of the damage if any, it could have been just stolen and recovered.
You just need to make sure the car is cheap enough in the first place as it's not ever going to be worth as much as one not on the register.

I agree with GrahamKay, it all depends on what the damage was and what category the car is right now.

Is that something you can find out from the DVLA or would you have to ask the seller?

The first thing to do is to ask the seller, after that if you decide your interested in buying the car get a HPI report done on it.
And as i said before you really want to get someone to look over it who knows what to look for.

You can find out from the DVLA and from the owner of the car. By law, the owner has to tell you the extent of damage that the car has suffered or you are entitled to a refund. If the owner is vague about it or says that he/she does not know, it was repaired before it was bought or not sure what the cat is then you really need to give it a miss.

If the car is a Cat D then you should be fine.
If the car is a Cat C then you need to walk away unless you have the knowledge yourself or have some one with you that knows the ins and outs of cars, chassis and running gear.

You would be better off to do a HPI check on the car and go for a Platinum check or a gold check which should cost no less than £20. Before you do the check confirm that the HPI company includes insurance on the check to an amount that exceeds the value of the car. Sometimes even the HPI companies mess things up and the car turns out to be a minger. In these cases, the insurance covers you for a refund of the total loss.

It is always best to do a HPI check even if the car is costing you £1000. There could be a marker by the Police on the car or anything.............

Thanks for that. I'll definately keep that in mind. Would be nice if it was just a stolen/recovered with minimal damage. There seem to be alot of evo's for sale on PistonHeads from people who've lost their jobs. Would be a good time to buy soon, but I'm coming to the end of my contract in 3 wks too :) Sods law.

not worth the hassel & then you find out more info about the car thats not pleasing'
very unlikely chance of being lucky when buying a v car.
