Whine ?

Just been out in an Evo 8 thats for sale at my local dealers. Its done 73k with full service and is unmodded. Drives fine apart from a whine from the front passenger side at about 40 mph upwards. Is it the box and is it an expensive fix, dealer reckons hes had it checked out and no fault found ?

Wheel bearing or diff bolts possibly!!!

Just been tested so would have thought bearing play would have been picked up on, just frightened it may be the death whine ive just read about !!

If the garage selling it has done the test then I'd suggest a dodgy garage

Is that a reply or a statement ! If it is the box is it a major job ?

The box is more likely to crunch than whine

No crunching at all just the whine, would you chance it ?

It's definitely a bargaining point. I'd ask a specialist what they think it might be and maybe a price to sort it.

It's hard for me to give you a def answer since i can't hear it for myself but usually when you here a whine with that high of miles it's usually the transfer case not to expensive to fix just takes a bit of time to repair. Does it do it constantly over that speed no matter what?

All the time from about 40 onwards, i have said i will have it provided the whine is sorted on the service this week so will report back !

Mine does the exact same been told transfer box so I'm looking for one too
But just to check is this diff bolts or pinion gear as found another tranny for £400 but the bolts are like £10 new lol just want to get your thoughts before I to buy a transfer case, mines same as op 35mph whines in or out of gear but load down as slightly goes , out of gear coming to a stop whines a treat sounds like a ppg box ATM lol

Well, the verdict is its a well known fault on the Evo 8 transfer box,replacement required with labour approx. £1000 for a second hand one supplying and fitting. Have to walk away from this one and keep searching !

Iv got a whine....mines the transfer box i found a really cheap one as the fella upgraded to rs gear (£350) and plan to fit it myself, how much is he asking for it?
