Does anyone on here own, owned or driven a civic type r ep3 or a Leon cupra r mk1?
Me and the missus have shipped out her Ford ka and looking for a hatch replacement and these both took our fancy.
I was wondering if anyone had good or bad points about them?
Feel free to suggest any others although criteria is, fast, get a pram in the boot, 30 mpg+
And upto 6.5k

my bro ha a civic type r ep3 and that was nice had plenty of room in it, pretty quick too down side only 3 doors complete nightmare with a car seat lol, seat leon cupra is also very nippy not too good on mpg though, and chew through front tyres, i'd have to agree with geof on that one as much as i dispise golfs but go for the red i one they have more bhp roughly 160-180bhp, or a seat leon fr version tdi they are 2.0l turbo diesel roughly 160-180bhp :)

SEAT has the VW engine but is cheaper :)

Had a SEAT sport 1.8t, basically the cupra without the full body kit but all the rest was the same. Had the golf gti engine as SEAT are part of the group as are skoda and audi ;)

Couldn't fault it but wanted something more so traded for the Evo :D

i had an ep3 for 3 years, sold it to buy my evo.

loved it and miss it loads.

parts and tuning are expensive and that is about the only down side i had for it.

it was actually not bad on fuel averaging about 26mpg and tht was not quite careful driving but not over the top either. and with a decat and ram induction.

i was actually looking at some last night and the prices start at about 2.5k so great value for money.

the are relentless they keep going and take all amounts of stick, in my 3 years the only prob i had was a syncro going in the gearbox but that was my fault.

i had the cupra as a demo when i sold cars and to be honest it has no edge to it a very boring car to drive.

saying that it comes down to space now the type r has most space in its class but only 3 doors, never a prob for the driver as the drivers seat doesnt move forward to let a passenger in the back so the front passenger always has to move haha.

i did think about the fr as then you get decent power and mpg, they also have a huge boot.

i am going to test drive an a3 monday after work... the 3.2 v6. i know mpg isnt great but hey!! lol.

getting a seat into the back isnt a problem with a 3 door because we managed with the ka somehow, and the civic is considerably bigger.... and like you said, there is a massive bargain to be had out there...
are they loud when driving on motorway as alot of people say its quite bad?

:hm: decisions decisions

No they Arnt loud. Tyres are important though it does matter a lot with road noise but with the bridgstones you get no road noise. Engine is relativly quiet under 6000rpm as above its an animal.

It's only when you start changing from the standard exhaust and air intake that you become an asbo driver. It's an all round well honed car

Go and be a test drive pilot at your local Honda. The cars performance will surprise you for only being 200bhp

I was looking at a ctr a while back. Very impressive all round and a great car for the money.
Ive never been too impressed with the seat, nothing wrong with them, just not such a great all round car imo.

I had an ep3 and loved it.
Drove it hard and fast and it never gave up. Was as sweet as anything when I sold it with 84k on the clock. The whole car is bullet proof.
Great handling in the dry (everywhere was flat almost) and predictable (if leery) in the wet.
I would have one again in a flash.

never a prob for the driver as the drivers seat doesnt move forward to let a passenger in the back so the front passenger always has to move haha.
Best design feature ever!!!

i had a black ep3 for years, loved every minute of it,
if i was told i could only drive that for the rest of my days i woulf be happy,
when the v-tec kicks in at 5500rpm its awesome, especially with a good induction kit and exhuast system, it sounds quality

here's it

i think alot of these replies have edged me the way i was thinking. looking about the market you can get a much better ctr than a leon or golf for age, cost and mileage. :D thanks guys

I was never really a dc5 fan. My mate had an imported one which run higher power but he could never beat me in drag or with corners lol. Ep3 Ftw I know jonny shares the same enthusiasm as me too lol

i got into one for a test drive was genuinely gonna buy it but i must have been expecting too much didnt excite me at all lol

plus the fact that it was badly resprayed and advertised as having skunk2 cams and a skunk 2 ecu which it didnt and the guy kept a black oily rag under the bonnet!!

where is jonny lately??

They are generally exciting cars, the vtec makes it relentless. There is pull in each gear no matter what the revs which is summat I had to get used to with the evo having to change down gears and allsorts.

He is a busy boy lately not much time for internet

Only thing wrong with the type-R was the steering racks were an issue on some, but they were swapped easy enough from Honda, no problem at all,
Make sure that it has been done or that it is working good bud as quite expensive to repair,
It happened with mine and I went to local dealer and that took it in and fixed it right away, and paid nothing
