Which EVO

Hi
Looking at swapping my TVR Chimaera for an EVO. Will have 8-9k to spend. Should I go for a standard set up or modified. Many have bumped up the bhp to 3,4 or 5 hundred, will these modifications reduce reliability. Also what sort of mileage will these engines do without rebuilds.
Hope you can help.
Thanks

Likely hood of finding a std evo is slim

Choose a shape/model that you like the look of and go from there. As long as they have been looked after they will last the same as any other car.

Post up links with what your looking at getting and we should be able to help more :D

you'll probably be looking at a 6, 7 or early 8 for that sort of money.

7 and 8s are similar in looks, 6's are a bit different.

I would personally for that money go for a 6 and then keep a couple of grand back for a little customisation to your liking.

you could probably get around 350-400bhp from the standard engine with basic mods such as 3inch exhaust, remap, induction and fuel pump (walbro 255l) without too much hassle. After that though you looking at upgraded internals/turbo and that's where it can start to get really expensive.

As mentioned, find one you like and if you post up the link to the advert or give a few details there are plenty on here who can give you some good advice.

I think we may even have a buyers guide on this site somewhere of thigs to look out for (which I clearly missed when buying mine!! >.< )

Good luck and an advanced welcome :)

As said you could get a later 7 in mint condition
Or an earlier 8 , probably a 260

There arnt many standards ones but it is better to get one that hasn't been tweaked cause then you are making the changes and can do what you want to it, but if you get one that has been tweaked then you should check it to make sure it gas been done properly so it is running the correct power, not over boosting and got the right mods for example an evo8 with over 400bhp shud probably have had forged internals and depending on the model different injectors or conrod bolts so you dnt have pistons flying out.
If you find one tweaked up just ask someone on here, tell what has been done and what power it has got and what mods. Check for proof of power for example dyno runs and stuff so you know what you are looking at. Plenty of properly modified ones but check to make sure.
Good luck mate

Further help

Thanks guys for all that useful information. I was looking for a fairly standard car, but have been offered a swap with this one. MITSUBISHI EVO 6 2.3 STROKER FULLY FORGED 410BHP (1999) Could you take a look at the advert on this website and tell me what do you think?
Do you think I am going to have reliability proplems with this spec
Can you easily turn down the boost to reduce the bhp and reduce the stress on the engine for everyday running, then turn it up for fun, trackdays etc
Are these clutches very hard to operate as the wife cant drive the Chimaera for the clutch.
Thanks everyone for the help, hope to have a car soon, maybe this one.

Strokers ain't revvy lumps I personally think 2ltr is better and if it has a paddle clutch they can be nasty but twin plates feel like standard but with lots more bite lol

Only 410bhp at 1.75bar from a 2.3 stroker!!
Std pipes and plastic BOV!!
No mention of what ecu, but its upgraded!!
All that money spent on the engine build but all the other parts are std!!!
Uprated lights, look std to me!!

This would be suspicious with out ton's of paperwork to prove the work
