Replied with some general q's, but he PM'd me a while ago, I replied and he got back to me today to say that John (evonut270) is going to look at it for him next week. Not really sure why he posted up his previous power graphs TBH.

ive got a question for the geeks

how come someone can ask for a geek to map there car on mlr and a geek maps it for them (beer tokens exchanged) and they then start a thread to thank the mapper eg---- thanks ???? ? for mapping my car. hence this takes away money from registered traders on the mlr??????? im saying geeks seem to be mapping cars at the going rate, surly they should be traders on mlr for doing this ??????? just wot ive noticed lately ;)

Think the difference is that traders advertise their services. A "geek" can't start a thread saying they will map folks cars for beer tokens, xxx price, or whatever. Just if someone asks "Any geeks near xxx", then they can reply and help out a fellow member.

If there is no blatent advertising then you're not breaking any rules and just helping out a fellow member.

Just like if you posted up saying anyone near Hereford help with an engine swap, then you get a load of guys willing to help. If you give them beer tokens or whatever for helping you out that's got nowt to do with the MLR, but has still taken business away from a trader.

There is also no reason why you can't post up to say thanks to xxx for helping you with the engine swap. Be it mapping, a clutch change, an engine swap, or even an oil change. If you post asking for help and take up the offer of someone other than a trader, you have taken business away from an MLR trader. Does that mean the person that helped you should become a trader? ;) Regardless of whether money has exchanged hands or not, that is all work that could have been done by an MLR trader who in the end never got it.

Theres a fair few that do help out for nothing, no beer tokens at all exchanged.

but its still knowingly taking trade away from traders. also ive noticed the geek siggys appearing again on the mlr, i thought andy asked for them not to be used??? as for payment i thought the gentelmans agreement was a £50 DONATION towards running costs of the club??? or was this just years ago??
just like to add im not bothered im a ecutec fan. just something ive been noticing ;)

Geek siggys aint nowt to do with me at least, never have had one TBH. Anything exchanged is at the discression of the 2 people involved and no-one else, some people do it for free, some do it for money, some take beer (I was once given a 24 pack, lol).

Also, people don't take into account how expensive it is to map peoples cars. Cable is about £100, wideband is £200, det-cans are £330, knock analyser another £350, replacment sensors are £70 a pop for the wideband, replacement cables for det-cans are £45 a pop (one of mine got damaged on a bonnet hinge), tailpipe clamp is £75, £200 for a netbook, etc. Over £1000 worth of kit in the car when you're out mapping someones car. People just think all you have is a laptop & a cable, and you can make a load of cash of it....easy money. In reality, that is not the case.

Just in the last 8 or 9 days I have been through 2 wideband sensors, in turn costing me £140. One died from wear & tear, which is fair enough, the other got damaged after falling out of the exhaust, was only 4 days old, and the tailpipe clamp was ruined which was another £75.

i find it hard geoff to understand the cost implications of a remap, so i got into in myself even though it had just been mapped. i can understand ecutek software and licences are expensive, so why are tuners turning more to ecuflash lately? imo because theres money to be made!! i do it for the love not the money, but if tokens are offered i aint gonna turn them down.

Fall back as in 'I've got a problem help' doesn't really mean you'll get help from a trader either. Not slating any traders but they could just as easily say it wasn't there map that caused a problem...

Geeks can be just as helpful in after sales back up too
