What to look for!

G'day all!

Just sold my car (Mazda RX8) and am looking for something more powerful so am considering an EVO IX FQ-360 MR.

I'm just trying to find some info regarding common faults to look out for and how to find them when taking a test drive.

Also, is it worthwhile getting the RAC/AA to do a car check and how good are they at finding faults?

Hi mitman and welcome to our little Forum!!!

That is a good model to go for.

If you have the RAC or AA come out to inspect a vehicle you get some protection if it turns out to be a minger. They run an OBD test on the car as well so they get a slightly better picture of what the car has to say for itself too.

If you decide to opt out of the RAC/AA inspection then just remember, if the engine management/AYC/ACD lights are on then walk away unless the car is priced at a couple of thousand pounds lower then the average selling price. In which case it still may or may not be a bargain depending on the service history and general condition of the car.

Be sure to carry out a HPI inspection, make sure it is a Gold Standard check and not the text message or £9.99 ones as they do not cover you fully if the HPI company give you misleading/incorrect information.

Just wanted to thank you guys for the help in the hunt for the car. Once I get it, I should be a more active member of this forum (probably asking for advice rather than giving it straight away).

Just one last question:

What's the best approach to finding insurance for the car, going with the numerous price comparison websites or with a specialist broker?

I would have to agree with Geof and say that Pace Ward are well worth a try as I have found that most Evo owners have had good premium quotes from them and many members on non Evo sites have always said Pace Ward are pants for them and only worth going with if you have an Evo.

On a serious note, Its hard sometime to get a decent insurance quote here in n.ireland,, They either dont cover n.ireland or cover imports,, So 9 times outa 10 you end up getn shagged over insurance

Getting the car tuesday evening. Can't wait!!
Pace Ward is the cheapest insurance I could find by about £300, so I'm going with them.

Just a few questions for you guys:

I know it's best to let the car warm up and cool down for about a minute before you move off/turn the engine off, but if the engine is warm when you start up do you still have to wait the minute for warm up? ie. when opening the gate and garage door for the car I would prefer to take the keys out the car when doing so, but then return to park the car in the garage.

The Evo only really requires a warm up on a cold start, it is not a minute as you think it is, the best thing to do is let the temperature gauge register just over the first mark which is around 40 degrees or there about.

Once the car is over the first mark, you can switch it off and back on and drive straight away.

When it comes to switching the car off, it is usually good to wait a couple of minutes unless you have an automated turbo timer as the correct amount of time to let the turbo wind down depends entirely on how much welly you have been giving the car.

I suggest that you invest in a good turbo timer if there is not one fitted, it will save you having to sit in the car all the time. Good timers have a time up as well as down which means that the car is allowed to warm up in the mornings whilst you finish your breakfast!!!

What some people do is keep their car below 3000 RPM for the last 3 to 5 or so minutes of their journey so the car can be switched off more or less as soon as they reach their destination.
