what manifold????

finailly got my evo 5 engine and after getting a few more parts like cam belts, gaskets etc its ready to go in!

i was speaking to my mechanic last night and he said it would be best to get an exhaust manifold before i fit my engine rather than after but we have no idea on what one to get.

im not flush at the moment but i also dont want to get one that going to crack/break on me

does anyone know what manifolds are best value for money?

If you want 1 that will last, you need either:

JMF
Full Race
or Mynes

Only the JMF has stainless flanges on it (so won't rust) the other 2 use mild steel.

All priced around £700 - £800.

All others will crack sadly, and tbh i'm not convinced the cheap ones (ebay etc) give any power gains, but they do change the exhaust note.

Fingers, get a standard one and go for some thing a little later on when you have the money.

All of Russ's suggestions are good but you will need to save up for a little while.

Keep us posted and for God's sake, don't get any of the crap on ebay because they are not worth a penny.

Nothing was confusing, just mearly pointing out that unless he has £700 - £800 to spend on 1, then he is better off sticking with the standard manifold

thanks lads, im gona see what my mechanic comes up with but i think your right, il put my standard one on and start saving!! was just trying to save some garage bills by getting it done while the engine was out!!

They crack up within a couple weeks and even quicker under heavy boost which results in the owner cracking up and that will not be a good thing in your case.

I had an xs on my evo 3 that i sold a couple of years back, i put it on days before i sold it thinkin i will get more for the car. I got more but 4 days later the guy what bought it from me rang because he wanted the ebay invoice. The crappy thing had cracked under hi boost. He never got a replacement, he just got fobbed off. I tried to help him but the seller said the car is sold on and i aint entitled to anything! I told ebay and he told them that what did expect for hundred quid!!!

the reason they crack is because they are very thin steel (needed to form in 1 piece)

some people run the cheaper ones fine but they have put an extra support holding the turbo up to take the weight off the manifold.

(even some expensive ones crack without having the extra support)

They ALL crack sooner or later, with or without support. I had a conversation with Russ when he came over to my place and he was adamant that even the HKS ones have been known to crack with bracing/supports in place.

They simply are too thin.

Unless of course you get a custom job done with seem welded bends, the likes of which are trademark at Car Planet. They will cost a couple of arms and a leg too but Clive reckons they are worth every penny whilst Lawrence nods silently in the back ground

At Torque Flow, they have a skip that is reserved for old exhausts that have been taken off cars and the majority of competition cars that come in for custom jobs are stripped of their cracked tubular manifolds and thrown into there to be sent to their supplier who recycles the material to make new pipes.
It is a vicious circle!!!

very good guy, with crazy mad pipe bending skills, i had a down pipe custome made from him last year, IT DID COST £300 ODD BUT THE WORK HE PUT IN AND THE POWER INCREASE STILL PUTS A SMILE ON MY FACE

he prefers to seam weld rather then bend though but only on the powerful cars i think
