turbo problems

Hi all. i need some help ive just fitted a new turbo to my evo 8 260 . the one i put on is the evo 9s turbo it fitted ok but it makes a strange whizzing noise when it spools up. ive checked the shaft it has a 1mm play in it and some light oil showing on the air intake side.it will not spool up unless it under heavy load so hard to look for any air leak,s its a brand new turbo so all advice welcome

How do you know it only spools on heavy load?
Comparing the 8 260 turbo to a 9 is a little different lol
The 9 is bigger and better. You may be hearing the induction noise of the bigger 9 turbo

hi mate good point it might be spooling sooner then i think .so the noise must be happening under heavy load . allmost sure its not induction noise though

it shoudln't really sound any different if you've not altered the induction side. if its really loud i'd be having a look in to see that the compressor wheel isnt touching the housing!

oh and you really shouldn't be giving the car 'full' load with the E9 turbo without mapping it!

hi all thanks for all advice . i spoke to a lad at evotune he said the noise is probably my modified j pipe not fitting right. so going to get an e9 j pipe and then get it mapped so fingers crossed thats it.

yeah, if the flange is distorted it'll blow through it like a reed. best off with the proper j pipe

sounds like a boost leak to me, is an easy thing to check
