Right this is a friend's car as mine is being rebuilt :)
Evo8 fq300 stg1 mods only
While driving heard a clunck and lost all boost. Pulled over and turned off. Heard a few more clunck noises like the turbo was still trying to spin.

Most likely cause:-

Turbo gone bang??
??

Sounds similar to when my skyline blew a turbo. Sounded somewhere between a clunk and a boost pipe popping off. Then bits of turbo rattling out through the exhaust.

take the intake pipe off and have a look and the fins and check the play in the shaft, if its the exhaust side gone then you'll have to check the elbow side

Andy ... Told them to check that 1st :)

It's the panicking txts I was getting as to what it might be causing me to ask the question on here lol

Especially when a so called friend with a 'scooby' was telling them it would cost 3k + to fix it :-(
Although he was also saying he got 400bhp @ only 1.3bar boost .....

I can fix it for £2.5k :)
"400bhp @ only 1.3bar boost" that must be a lot of NOS as well then :)

probably connect back up a boost pipe ~ £10 the rest would be profit :)

with out looking over the car it would be very hard to say as "clunking noises" could be anything, wheres your mate based?

starters i'd do the following;
make sure there's not a big hole in the block (does the car still run?)
inspect the turbo by removing the intake pipe's
if theres a lot of play inspect from the elbow side
boost leak test the system

Large amount of movement in turbo shaft!!

Turbo blown is the diagnoses ....
No oil in the intercooler luckily ....
Car still starts and idles ok ...

It peaked at 1.8 dropping to hold 1.5 bar ... Problem??

sounds like the turbo has over sped does the car have a boost leak as 1.8 to 1.5 should be fine all day long

Had it seezed closed. You would think you'd have alot more boost than 1.8 tailing to1.5 if it over boosted

the actuator pipe had split causing it not to open was the diagnosis from my mechanic mate who got the turbo out tonight

id be unsure that a heavy boost spike would cause a turbo bearing failure, its not an impossibilty but unlikely, id be checking oil pressure, with a gauge and making sure theres no restrictions in the oil feed pipe
