top end rattle

Guys i have yet even more trouble with my car and no idea whats happened. I had the engine work done and car was fine for a couple of days, then the auxiliary belt slipped so put a brand new one on today along with a new tensioner as well, got home from the garage today after getting it all done, went to the shops ten mins later and there is a bad tapping noise when car goes over 1500 revs. took the rocker cover off and the cam belt is running true no play in cam pullys, cant see any signs of wear on them either plenty of oil in it, just got changed yesterday. could this be my lash adjusters making a noise or could it be worse? quite a loud noise but defo top end noise, car was just run in and was done properley too.
Please help guys, i have already spent £3000 on my car in last 3 1/2 months and only had 4 days use out of it and they have been in the last 2 weeks.

Possible lash adjusters. If you changed the oil and not put top grade in then they may have got clogged. Giving you the rattle.
Not sure on what else you have had done as you say its just been run in?

lash adjusters at 1500 revs? maybe, you could take them out and clean them that would eliminate that, also check your rockers are all seated correctly, as i had a rattling at the top end a number of years ago ( thought lash adjusters) rocker fell off totalled an E8 engine..... might be anything like that, worth a check tho!!!!

Hey guys thanks for the replies. Just shed a bit more light on to the situation, I had a rebore from 85mm to 85.5mm, srp forged piston kit put in, big end bearings were done and main thrust bearings done also, head skimmed and Evo 8 MR head gasket put on. I used Millers running in oil, with oil and filter changes done at 200 miles, 402 miles, 704 miles and 996 miles being the last one just done yesterday and i used Millers XFS 5w40 oil. Car covered 8.3 miles from garage to my house, whilst sitting in traffic on way back i heard a slight tapping noise so pulled over and called the mechanic and he came to meet me and said it sounded like the lash adjusters, said it would be ok until i could take it back up today but when i pulled up at my house it went from a little tapping noise to a much louder tapping noise.
Called mechanic again told me to leave the car and he would come down and take a look, he got here about 20 mins later and took the rocker cover off my car.
No specific damage vissable to lash adjusters, cams or valves, couldnt pin point it, now it has to be towed and taken back in to investigate but no space to keep it at the garage and is now sitting outside my house. hope this helps understand a bit better and hope it leads to someone being able to help me. Thanks guys

Not sure if you have heard of tappets? That is what they are, a hydraulic valve under your rocker cover and you have a twin cam so 8 spaced out under each cam just above the valve springs. Quite an easy fix but set of tappets/lash adjusters for new ones can set you back over £100, cheapest I've found is on eBay and are £105 including delivery. But have the ones on your car checked first as you may have another problem. That's what I'm doing now. Hope this helps

if you cant get your mechanic to look at it then a quick check for you to do is .

remove the rocker cover turn the engine via the crank pulley till a pair of cam lobes point straight up then with a finger push down on the rockers one at a time and compair
,
" should be hard with no or very little movment . your looking for the softest one as thats the faulty one . may be more than one but usualy just one .

do this for all the rockers turning via the crank pulley .

clock wise only .

if they are as noisy as you say it wont be hard to find as it will be the soft bouncy ones :O) also the rocker will feel looser than the rest .

as above might be a good idea to just remove and clean them .

That is some great info thanks, i will try it when the rain stops, dont want inside the rocker getting wet. My rocker cover is off the car already so just a matter of using technique you advised and jobs a good un. Thanks again for the help, i will be able to get the mechanic to sort it quicker and cost me less as he wont have to investigate the problem first if it turns out that the lash adjusters have gone faulty
