Issue is with the 4 crank and the bearings. get an E5-9 block and forge it or use E9 MR pistons and rods, a little head work (3 angle valve seats and a skim) if using the stock turbo. Maf/Stock Adapter and Air Filter. Get your ecu mapped/flashed.

yep, scrap the block and get a later one :)

cheapest option os probably buy a 260 botom end or mr engine. mr engine has more agressive cams and is good for 400 bhp all day long :)

+1 Agree but will cost your in he region of £1350-2000 for a complete engine or try to pick up an MR GT complete block but hard to find and expect to pay £500-800 for one block complete and then head work costing from £35-1000

MR GT cams are better cams and an E9 block has forged piston and rods as standard.

I have a head that maybe of use, came off an E8 and has had work done to it, stuck it up in the for sales section ;)

John@evo breakers has a MR motor £1800..

as above the 4 motor is know for over wearign crank bearings.. something to do with the design.

as long as i push 400-450 bhp ill be happy

You will pay a lot for an E9 block complete or any E8 MR engine, or E9 complet engine. If you get a cheap block E5-8 with a crank cradle i can sort out with a crank, shell bearings, piston kit etc. If you only want 400-450 BHP and similar with torque you are best to get an MR engine or FQ complete as the cheapest option but your stock turbo wont give you 450 BHP, 400/400 you can achieve with a little work to the head.

If you can get an E5-8 block complete, do a little work to your head and get a remap you will get 400/400 from using your stock turbo and keep costs to minimum and within your budget. I can offer you a worked head to your budget or requirements on a part exchange basis.

I'm sorry but the whole article is about the rare fq 400...
Most of us are under the impression that the 400 does have a forged engine from factory hence the rarity. And now proven in this article.
But it doesn't say the 9 block has forged rods

Since the 2 of you think you know so much why dont you call your local mitsubishi dealer and ask them...:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Because they can barely tell you what model Evo they have in stock (personal experience) let alone what is inside the engines

For anyone who does not know this ask mitsubishi themselves and they are classed as a forged rod and piston from mitsubishi.

Mitsubishi Evo (03-) MR FQ-400 4dr Saloon Review | Autocar

" To attain the required power and torque most of the engine’s key components have been replaced, except, interestingly, the crank. There’s a much bigger Garrett turbo, stronger forged pistons, forged conrods, a beefier cylinder head, an entirely new exhaust system, a bigger Motec ECU and a far more efficient fuel pump. Unsurprisingly, the clutch has also been heavily uprated and is effectively now a competition unit, although the gearbox and basic suspension set-up are unchanged from those of lesser models. "

The article you posted even says the 400 is the only model to have forged internals. Are you that bored that you need to argue with yourself?

I am chucking a forged 8 motor into my 4. Aiming for a reliable 400-450bhp. I seriously would not push any standard engine over 400bhp.

Yes some people do it and get away with it but you also get those who aren't so lucky!

Over 400bhp, rod job, Over 500bhp fully forge it seems to be the general rule.

As for standard 9 rods being forged, they are stronger but 100% not forged.
