Temp dropping while driving

If I am simply cruising along maintaining speed ie 60mph my temp drops to a 3rd of where it normally is and when I start accelerating or general driving round town stays at its normal roughly halfway. What would cause this thermostat? I would like to think I have really good cooling as I have no aircon rad blocking the normal rad but find it hard Fo believe

it could also be the sensor dropping out because its on its way out or a bad connector. take the thermostat out and drop into to some hot water to see if it opens up to see if its ok.

Cheers mate, I'm hoping its just the thermo, it's also quite slow at getting up to temp and while driving at higher speed the blowers start blowing colder so it does point to thermo, it will be here tomos anyways ill pop it on as its prob still it's original

Ok well the thermostat is in and not a single bit of difference. Example... I overtook tonight on the way home 50 up to 80 and the temp gauge dropped half between normal and bottom and as soon as I maintained my speed went back to normal.

What did you mean by sensor dropping out? That's my next port of call, or blanking off some of my rad and going for a drive and see if its anything to do with air temp outside

I ment that when the car is under load the voltage through the thermisitor (temp sensor) is probably changing making the gauge drop. I'd look at replacing the sensor and checking the wiring and connectors to see if they are ok

Don't you mean 50 to 70 anything more would be speeding lol..

As andy said you need to check the sensor.

I was Talkin about this to my dad a lol while ago as he mentioned about voltage changes, and we wasn't sure if the altinator stabilised the power accordingly. I will check this tomos thanks for the help mate ill keep you informed.

Lol no I did mean 80 I'm a bad boy lol but in my defence I had good visibility, car was capable and I was making progress overtaking and reduced my speed when I pulled back into my lane

My e4 is doing this but the temp drops right off , over idles as if on choke & seems to be over fueling .... Would all point to cold running

Thought I would update. I not checked the sensor yet :-( I was too busy at work I managed to grab half hour makin a cover for some of the rad to rule out over cooling,

Bottom line no difference, apart from when the temp is dropping its still blowing out hot air in the blowers.

The heater hoses are warming nice and quick and the top hose is staying cool until the car is up to temp and letting the thermostat open and it heats up with the water, but while accelerating the temp is still dropping and when I calm and cruise it stays as it should

Sensor is next to come off and be checked when I get time

My guess is the thermostat is stuck open allowing heating up while stood or slow but constantly cooling when giving it some
