Subwoofer in boot dilemma

Im in the process of uprating the ICE in my evo i have a JL set up on order and is being delivered any day now .

The problem I think I am going to encounter is the loss of performance from the sub in the boot unless I mount the sub facing the rear seats and then build a baffle board or false wall out of mdf behind the sub box....this should force most of the sound forward instead of loaing sound and performance from the driver in the boot.

or am I being over technical and does the evo boot not drain the sub power down too much.

the sub is a properly boxed 12" JL and is ampd with the matching JL amp so equipment or sound quality won't be an issue just the above mentioned boot space issue or not (as the case maybe)

I had an MG ZS before the Evo which had a similar if not bigger boot space.

Had the sub mounted with the speaker cone facing out. Absolutely no issue with sound quality and the bass filled the car nicely.

jonny you look at most instals and the sub always faces out the back of the car.
mine used to bounce around the boot facing all directions and made no difference except when the wires ripped out lol

JL audio stuff is good stuff mate. top tip, dont crank the sub up straight away. nice and low for a week or 2 to run the bad boy in :)

Good tip on running in what I will do is run the sub in on some white noise at home for a bit ;)

The bloke at JL said that a baffle will get the most out of the sub as a boot will act as a larger box and if I baffle it the sub will easily penetrate the seats especially if the rear arm rest is out acting a a port .

If the car was hatchback he recons it wouldn't be an issue.

I'm just worried about the boot takin performance from the single 12", I'm also hoping the 12" will be punchy enough the box is nice and small so should create punch.

If I make a baffle then the box is sealed in and can never be removed easily so I may fit without and see how it sounds but to make the baffle is a ball ache so if I was goin to do it then I wanted to do it while the install was being done.

So as it stands now my boot is stripped and silent coat matted ready for an install.

I'm also taking the rear shelf top carpeted section and silent coating under that tomorrow as well not that I will amp the rear speakers only the front two and the sub.

Oh and the tweeter and cross over are in the door panel and looking good....but now ive changed the front comps to a better pair so need to refit tweets LOL

What I'm after is a quality sounding install not a load of bass so the sub placement is vital due to only having amped front components and head unit run rear coaxials the mid and treble will be awesome up front so need the bass to fill the cabin not the boot .

Mate the baffle board needs to be hinged and all sorts to get in the car and the cutting will be a fooling nightmare but like I said if I have to I have to then I can bling up the amps with some nice blingy distributor and connectors for the amps too so I may do the baffle.....steveyb and I will be doing the install over a weekend so need to get it as easy to install as poss come install time pal

Never heard of this baffle board idea. I'm sure it works but never had a problem before.

Oh and I never remember a 12" to be punchy. I have a 10 and even that ain't punchy.
You need mid bass speakers which your upgraded rears should give you and I'd be amping them up to match the front if I was you. They will give you so much more of a alround sound instead of just being say up against the front speakers.

either a 12" and a 10" or for proper bass 12" and 15" so you can get all the vibes 1 kind of sub dnt cut it. i got rid of my sub got fed up with it just not sounding right, have considered those ones that fit under the seats for a lil atmostphere thats all im after really. the jl stuff like lee said it top, i like the floating sub idea basically turn the whole boot into a box and sound deaden it

Or is it that your ears are satisfied.....as for the sub it will punch if amped up and boxes right mate a 10" would be ideal but JL recon the
12 will be better.

As for the rear components as they are now amping them will create a terrible sound stage as both speakers are so close together and as no one really sits in the back the sound will be quality with front components and a sub until I can get mid bass drivers for the rear doors but tbh I don't think I'll need them

However I will give it a go with head unit running the two rear co-axials and if they are poo I'll disconnect them altogether until the above

The baffle board is a false wall in the boot behind the sub box sealing the sub box in the back 3rd of the boot and forcing the sound forward instead of around the rest of boot.

Basically the more sound in the cabin the better I don't want the boot and passers by to benefit mate lol

Have a look at evom and you will see how a Evo system should be done .... Amazing installs over in the USA

Also look at over the road and theres a ginger pimp install an he does the same With a sub in the arm rest

I'm not after Cora's ripspeed sound Lee...... I'm after the sound quality to match the quality of the speakers subs and amps. No point in getting the gear and then installing it like a ass hole lmao

I think your wrong to leave out the rears. I drove round for months in my currant Evo with just a pair of alpine 2 ways in the front. And they were only like 4" or something as someone had made these rings up so they fitted the larger hole. I upgraded them to some 7" alpines which was much better then I found some other speakers 6 1/2" just kicking around. Nothing special at all and so put them in the rear shelf and it just just gives you that rear infill.

Do you not have surround sound at home Jonny ?? :):):)

Boot is deadened but to get that sort of bass from free air 8" you will have to spend big money were talkin £1000,s

And to correctly match two diff size subs in any car is a job for a miracle worker I did mention it and the JL blokes reply was
" so your after the holy grail " LOL

It then involves two sound processors and a load of tuning work that will be a ball ache and take a proper audio technician to get it right really
Not too mention that then I will have two boxes to fit in the boot at diff sizes and that will be a load more work lol

Like I said I'll try without baffle or plot make it easy I may build a box around the sub box to mount amps to and create the baffle :)

Rear infill is still required regardless :)
