Strange noise at high rpm (Evo 4)

Hello,

I've just recently bought my first evo (E4) but I think there is something wrong with it already. When the engine reaches around 5000 rpm I can hear a buzzing/rattling noise which is quite loud and shakes the car. There's no problem up until 5000 rpm and it even occurs when the car is in neutral.

The car idles fine and starts to boost around 3500 rpm. I've took it to two garages up to now and they seem to think it's the turbo. However they said they are not entirely sure.

If they are right and the turbo is on it's way out, would i be able to bolt on a 5,6,7 turbo as a replacement without changing the ecu etc? I'm not looking for more power, its just that it seems easier to find 5,6 & 7 turbos.

I don't think this is turbo, it would start straight away as soon as it boosted. Plus if it was rattling etc it would probably have imploded by now and screwed your engine. Also it would happen in neutral.

Could be clutch or flywheel related.

Where does the sound come from?

It shakes the car? Or is it a vibration noise?

Does it lose power?

I just took the car for a drive again and found that it starts at 4000rpm and gets more violent from there.
It does it in neutral and the engine doesn't feel smooth when the rattling starts. It feels like it's loosing power when it starts doing this but not a lot. It also seems to judder when i let off the accelerator.

To me it feels like it's coming from the engine but the people at the garage said they can hear it near the heat sheild.

When i change gear at 3500+ i can feel the vibration through the clutch peddle.
Could it be the balance shaft?

Also I could hear a slight whistling noise near the manifold whist it was idling.

I'm gunna take it to a Mitsubishi dealership tomorrow and see if they can shed any light on it. Just hope I can understand what the guy is saying cos i'm living in Japan. lol

Btw there is really bad brake shudder so you can hear that too. Will be putting the new discs/pads on after I get this sorted.

I haven't got this sorted yet as i've been to busy. They guys at mitsubitshi didn't really know what was wrong with it. They said it could be the transmission but im not sure because it still makes the noise when in it's not in gear. I'm gunna try and check if It's the balance shaft with the screwdriver trick if it's possible to do with the engine still in the car.

Balance shaft timing is my best bet, if its doing it out of gear as well, a kind or reverberating noise, youtube it there is a couple of examples on there

Any gear or any speed but consistently at the same rpm would be balance shaft.
I had it at 3500-4k rpm as did Craig. Mine coz the belt had snapped. Craig's coz he timed it up wrong lol

Ok, just a quick update.

I didn't have time to check the balance shaft but I did notice that there are times when the sound/vibration doesn't occur when I rev it in neutral. Would this happen if it was the balance shaft? Or would the sound constantly be there at the same rpm?

I've checked out some videos and the noise sounds similar to balance shaft related issues but because there are times when the noise doesn't occur, it's got me thinking it might be something else. Also the engine light came on and I got code 14 (TPS I think)

Hopefully I can have a proper look at it this weekend. Car is off the road until I find out what the problem is!

Hey there,
There is obviously an issue so “reving” it in neutral probably isn't the best idea... Go find you're self a reputable performance Evo specialist and let them have a look. IMHO Mitsubishi dealerships don't know their @ss from a hole in the ground. Is it a crank related noise? I read about a similar issue last year and that was bearing float on the camshafts.
