starting problems, possibly heat soak?

Hi all, need a bit of advice please.

Im well aware of the "lazy starter" problems with the evos but im having a bit of bother at the minute and i really dont know what else to try.

Basically, when the car is cold it starts without issue (stater motor still a bit lazy as expected).

However if i drive for any longer than 5-10 minutes (long enough to warm up the car) then turn off the engine, the starter will not crank over.
Its not the starter (i dont think?) as the knocking noise of a dead starter aint there.
Its as if it is struggling to turn the flywheel, My headlights dim when trying to crank it over, as if the starter is draining the battery attempting to start.

Ive fitted a brand new, fully charged, bigger output, battery today in a hope to cure the problem but it just hasn't.

Ive checked all the earth points in the engine bay, removing them and cleaning them up, but still no different.

I cant help but think something, somewhere is suffering from some kind of heat soak problem.

Any help, advise or even just guess work suggestions are greatly recieved.

Check cam or crank sensor

ive recently fitted a new cam position sensor and it made no difference

Only does it once warm? Cam sensor?

My 4 would start when cold no problem. But once warm it wouldn't Cam sensor fault came up, changed it and no problem. Got a heat shield for it now

but if its the sensor, the starter would still crank but wouldnt fire? wouldnt it?

my problem is the starter struggles to crank when warm

Starters when they are near the end of there life for some reason sound as though they have got tight with the heat from the engine.

Used to have an rs turbo just the same fault. Bought a new starter and problem fixed

Get the starter checked by a specialist

It's sounds like high resistance in the starter then, see if you can get a local garage to check how many amps the starters pulling

yeah, i was kinda dreading someone saying that lol.

I replaced the starter around a year ago for one that came off a broken car as the original starter just packed up, without warning one day.

Its only the past week or so that ive had this problem :-(

agree starter.. take off and clean might have loads of shite from clutch in there also... only a 10 min job..

can you buy some sort of rebuild kit for the starters?
If so, can you point me in the right direction

I still have the old (dead) one.
