hey peeps... i know the pistons in my mr fq 340 are good for 500/550bhp but what would you saftley run the rods at ?? people say they would be the first to go so does the rod snap or is it the bolts that give first?? any help would be great... cheers

its often hard to work out if a rod went first or a bolt as generally it makes a big mess, we normally say anything over 420 is potential for failure and recommend forging to be on the safe said after that. its often easier to replace the pistons at the same time rather than getting the pistons machined on the pin.

hey andy i just want a fast road car i was going to take it to nick at nr autosport for a rod conversion which would cost around £2000 with vat i only wanted to run around 450hp with as many toques as i could get its alot of money to spend just on making it stronger so i think i'm going to just go for 400/400 and just be happy with that some peeps say there isn't much difference between 400 and 450bhp

i'd never bother for a rod job just go complete forge if your paying £2000+ you may as well add the extra £400 for pistons and then know your safe for anything in the future.

from the picture it looks like you've got an 8? you should be ok to run 1.7-1.8 bar and with the right mods should see 410-430, there isn't much difference between 400 and 450 but once you get used to the power you'll always want more

what mods have you already done? have you had is mapped and dyno'd already?

Yeah that's it mate it is a 8 mr it's running autronic ecu and been mapped by nick at nr autosport and yes it's running 1.75 bar boost the other mods are uprated fuel pump twin plate clutch induction kit it should be running 380/380 so nick says and I can understand what your saying with always wanting more but I don't want to run big power I have to set myself a limit I don't want to loose drivability or reliability of it, so nick reckons that was the next step rods then he can turn the boost up like u said 1.8 and it would be good to go up to 500 with supporting mods ?

The reason I was going for a rod conversion was there was no running in which is great I have spoke to Lee at fq performance and he said it could be run in on the rollers if that's the right way or not I don't know else I would go fully forged..

if you did the internals then you could do 2bar, and going with something like a s209 you'd be looking at 470-480bhp and 430+lbft. You'd get very good low down power etc and be a quick car :)

Rods or forge would be the next step, along with injectors and turbo and possibly a throttle body and you should be good to go.

or you could put a 9 turbo on and aim for around 420 and save a bucket load of cash

if your putting new piston rings in and hone the bores (which i'd defo recommend) to make sure you get a good seal, then you'll have to run the engine in anyway,

Oh yeah I agree totally it's just who to do the work Norris designs nick at nr autosport or even fq performance plenty of people to do the work and all have different ways I just want a top job done at a competitive rate I think would just like to stay at 400/400 and leave it at that

we can do the work also :)

I think I'd recommend getting a dyno result of the car and see what is running and review where the gains are to be had to get you more power

Ok might be the best route to go next so who is it you work for ?? And the only other issue is that the ecu is locked out and only nick has the code

It was already on there mate when I bought the car I got it from Xtreame uk and couldn't find out anymore information about the car than what they give me it's a puzzling question??....

yeah we use the road also but use a virtual dyno for before and after results so you get an idea of where the gains have been,

We have a track record with mapping standard evo and subaru ecu's, power FC's and emanage systems, and are always looking at adding others to our belts :)
