Something I have noticed

Coming from the gtiroc I have noticed that it does not seem to be a lot of people doing major work on there own cars.

I have looked around and there does not seem to be engine/gearbox swap guides etc. Is it that most people take their cars to garages?

Don't get me wrong you see some excellent build threads here and on the MLR but a lot of the mechanical work seems to be done at the persons preferred tuner/garage.

Being new to the evo are they hard to work on?

Most work gets done in the winter months that's when the forum comes alive again IMO

I have just re-read my post and it sound like I am being funny!

I just mean that I dont trust garages to do stuff properly and like to do most stuff myself with mates to help. I just havent been able to find guides for the major jobs to do.

Are they all in the workshop manuals?

There's the how to section, to be honest it would be a huge job setting up a "how to" on an engine swap.


Most people just seem to get on with it and take a few pics on the way. You'll find more in the picture galleries with the build threads

They aren't hard to work on buddy so get those mitts dirty :razz:

Welcome to evo land, the place where fat wallets rule. There arent many "big" home builds going on because 90% of the owners pay someone to do it and if you listen to enough drivvel you will be convinced you need a so called specialist to do everything. Go visit mlr and youll see exactly what i mean. If you do it yourself you will be told your wrong and that you should of gone to tuner XYZ. Remember evos are a status symbol as well as a performance car. Majority of owners wont even drop there own oil. Its sad, its true but its all part of the forums nowadays.

Talk about something you dont truly understand and you will impress a moron.
Do something that they say cant be done and youll only impress half.
Prove it and wipe everyones faces clean an you shall be shunned!

I don't think this is evo specific, thing is, because evos are a little more expensive to run than some other performance cars it means that some owners pockets are that little bit deeper, and the deeper the pockets the more inclined owners are of the easy option and taking it to a tuner.

The mlr is in my opinion a check book forum, majority on there wouldn't change their own oil and would even pay someone to fill their tank if they could.

How ever...... Evoowners isn't like that. If you take a look you will find an engine thread quite well detailed from me, and there are various how to's available. Here on evoowners you will find people mostly completing work from oil changes to clutch changes and even ayc refurbs, and even some of our lady owners get their hands dirty, foxy gets stuck in.

I personally begrudge spending money at the best of times but especially so when I work for my dad in a HGV workshop so I have access to all tools and space and the knowledge.

Like its been said, the summer months it goes quiet here because of hols and shows ect but here you will find the people that have been there some that and got the skinned knuckles to prove it

You may find build threads on what people have done but not how too's.
Mainly because it's basically a straight swap for nearly every major part from 4-9
There isn't much need to explain that you remove a few bolts. Take the part off. Put new part on. Re attach bolts you removed.

Thats good to hear, Owning cars like the evo and my pulsar are only possible because of the work I and my mates do on them.

Looking around the evo it looks like its a lot easier to work on then the pulsar!

Every man to his own that's what I say! If I feel it's out my depth I either ask for advice ir take it to somebody I know and trust.

I spent years repairing and modifying lancia's and land rover's but sometimes I feel am out my depth on certain jobs on the Evo and then there's the time factor as am self employed and last but not least where I live my neighbours don't really want to see a car in bits!
