Smoking :(

Think this are finally packing up on the car..

Noticed it a few days ago that was getting the odd puff of smoke, would of said it looks more white than anything. Driving home today has to be the worst i seen it. Coupled with the fact the brakes went spongy on a few occasions.

Driving and on boost there is no smoke, let the revs drop off then take the throttle and you get a small amount of smoke then nothing.

Going to check the turbo, there was some oil inlet side when I checked it over the weekend. Know they have a habit of going unless its the signs of something more fatal?

Its not looking too bright, but answers on a post card

If there is oil in the cooler pipes then its most likely turbo

When you go off throttle and back on again and there's a puff of smoke it can indicate valve stem oil seals

If you leave it idling when hot for a few mins then rev it, does it puff out smoke?

Would be blueish smoke I'd think though.

They aren't a bad job on evos.

Only on the intake of the turbo, bit on the intake pipe, cooler top pipe is clean, not sure about the lower ic pipe mind

It only does it at 2k if you let it drop to about 2k and hit the throttle get a small amount of smoke. Don't smoke at idle, revved it when I got home. Didn't rev it to much but no smoke!! Nothing on boost. Nothing off boost, only does it at low revs if you tap the throttle

Not to easy to see out the mirror but its going to be oily.

My friend has damaged his stem oil seal on his scoob so I know the symptoms.

Bad turbo I'd have thought would be blue smoke on boost?

Did you let the car sit and idle before a gentle rev?

My friends scoob won't do it when cold either only when hot.

How much is his car blowing smoke?

Would depend on which seal when on the turbo, if the exhaust side when its seems to blow out oil once you let off.. Which mine doesn't plus there is only about 5.5k on the turbo so shouldn't have gone.

Yeah it was sat for a few moments before revving and still nothing.

Will see if it does it when cold tomorrow. Car doesn't get that hot lol.

His isn't when you let off, it's after he has let off then accelerates again.

It's the vacuum created whilst you let off that draws the oil through the seals, then when you go back on the gas it combusts it.

Quick google and it seems its pistons drawing oil into the bores.

So stem seals.

No that is it, let off and when you put your foot back on there is some smoke.

Didn't think it would be limited to a certain rev range though, expect it to do that no matter what revs the car was sat at.

Will have to take a look..

It's weird how it works. My mates does it worst in stop start traffic.

It's been like it for a good 2 years too, never got worse and two ring trips in that too with about 10 laps!

He knackered his with anti lag lol

His sounds worse than mine, so probably very early stages.

That's some time! How come he hasn't replaced them?

It's a £1k plus job on a scoob as the engine has to come out! as its a flat four the heads are on the sides of the engine :shock:

He's been advised that if he can live with the blue smoke puffs then its not really going to do any harm, his oil consumption isn't bad as its probably the smallest weep of oil each time.

My old scoob knackered it's piston rings and all it was good for was making blue fog clouds that could cover villages :razz:

I think you should just go get a compression test done to be safe though.

You removed a few IC pipes and checked for oil?

Removed the top one mate, was oil free..

Would expect something in there, may take off the lower pipe over the weekend just to make sure.

Try venting the breathers to atmosphere and doing a few pulls

They both run to a catch can. I checked that tonight and had normal sludge looking liquid in it.

Right, so a leakdown test is the next step if the turbo is not passing any oil
