hi

seen some chat about reversing evo front strut top mounts to improve front caster .

eg ,

swapping/ fitting the left and right mounts ns / os on the wrong side which has the effect of increasing the caster and improving the turn in feel and reducing understeer ,

has any one tryed this or come across this mod and will this work on standard mounts or is it just aftermarket adjustable ones .

cheers

cheers lee i cant see how it can work as my top mounts bearing seam to be off set and fitting them on the wrong side would change the shock position .

just thought i would get some feed back befor i tryed it :O)

apparently this also works on bmw m3 to ??

some usefull info

hi rob
ive read some people fit these the wrong way round to allow for caster adjustment not camber and adjust the camber at the bottom of the shock :O)

i have adjustable top mounts on my ohlins and will be trying the left right swap when i have a couple of hours spare :O)

Surely both os and ns would run the same castor. As it is a direction forward or backward of vertical axis. Most would run 0 or forward angled castor. Only way you would gain is if they were facing backwards :-/

i know what your saying and i thought the same .

i think it may be position of the mount to body bolt holes that offsets it side to side ? so when reversed the camber adjustment also adds some caster as a side effect ,

so instead of just moving in and out 90 deg to the car they may move more at a slight angle so adding camber also adds caster ,???

but i do seam to think that my top mounts where offset to one side " took off to check for a knocking bearing a while back " so swapping round could have a effect on its postion and effect?? caster directly ??

follow the mlr link at the top it seams a popular mod ?? " remove the space "

there is only one real way to find out :O)

well curiousity got the better of me and i decided to swap the struts round for the purpose of taking a couple of pic's .

i swapped them round took some pic's then put them back as they where as i dont have the time to track the car and dont have a working caster gauge at the moment any way :O)

first pic's are the nsf " left " strut top spun through its 3 possible positions staying on the left side :O)

the next 3 pic's are of the ofs " right " strut fitted on the nsf " left side " and again spun through its 3 possible positions ,

you will see that fitting them this way add 2 really possible postions for adding caster ,

1 of them could add caster as camber is added " would like to have seen a shallower angle "

1 . adds caster only but more one way than the other " would have to add camber via the strut lower bolts ??

hope this helps :O)

this is just so i could get a idea of what people where talking about and see for my self really .

my mounts may be slightly different to others and are set to -1.5 camber , and being a evo 4 i dont have camber adjusting lower strut bolts .

im not sure what effect fitting a standard mount on the wrong side would have as i dont have one to try but cant see it having a great impace on caster ???but could be wrong ...

im sure that the mounting holes could be redrilled to allow finer control of the caster vs camber adjusment but il leave that for you to decide :O)

cheers

As you say, re drill, the holes. The kit I posted up would help more coz you gotta drill your holes anyway :)
So you could slightly alter the positions to give camber with slight caster. Not as severe as just turning or swapping your top mounts ...

yes your kit would be a good option if only it was a uk seller :O)
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mitsubish...r_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item1c2a27d67e

and even revering the mounts seam to have there limits unless your willing to run big camber to get more caster / tinker with the mount or use the mount to adjust caster only and make the strut adjust the camber !!

even then i dont know how much caster would be gained on my mounts with out porting it slightly to allow more positive movement ????????
