rear cv joints evo 4 upgrade

hi guys have come across a small problem with my e4 rear drive shafts

. i am trying to replace the inner cv joints on my e4 with ones from a e 5 on bigger / stronger .

the problem seams to be that the 4 has double-offset joints fitted 6 bearings and the later are tripod joints 3 bearings ,

the joints fit the diff and the shaft spline perfect but the inner part of the new joint is thicker " around 1mm" and cover the circlip grove so cant be held in place .

now i am prob gonna just get a little bit taken off the sholder of the shaft to allow the joint to go on further " around 1mm .so that the clip fits

all i wanted to ask is has any one done this befor :O)
am i missing some thing

cus appently everthing is weaker on a four according to some!!!

Mainly the engines. It sounds risky butchering a drive shaft to make it fit on the off chance it's stronger. Cutting bits off may make it pop out under load, not great when cornering at speed and you lose drive. If it works, it works but I'd need to see which bit you're machining off.

hi mate .

my inners are shot , mitsubushi changes to this design on the five + as they where not up to the job , as i am now running 400 bhp i need to move on to the later ones .


as for the mod to the shaft . " you might know this "the inner part of the joint slides on to the shaft splines to a stop and then a circlip pops on the end .


all i am planning to do is remove a little from the stop to allow the new joint to move up the shaft afound 1mm to allow the clip to go in the oe grove .

the other option is to leave the stop alone and widen the grove past the end of the joint inner to allow the clip to fit .not to keen on this one .

i would love to use the 5 shafts but they are longer .

but as for the 5 joint the joint seams to be slightly deeper to allow more travel /range of movment ,

just wondered if any one had tryed to fit later joints befor .

ive never heard of doing this before!! i know a good few people running well in excess of 400 and never had a problem,
what do you use your car for then to need that doing?

Ah, I see now! I'd get them properly machined so they stay in balance, otherwise you may get bad vibration from the diff at speed.

i have a mate that dose this kind of thing for a living , he said pop the shafts round and he will do it . i just wanted some feed back befor taking the plunge :O)

hi only changing as my joints are fecked , and i always replace parts with the best i can , new or used , this seems like a simple up grade for not a lot of effort .

the car is a road car but always looking to improve .

will take them off next week and let you know how i get on .

there done and look great .

big thanks to mark at forest heath engineering for doing them for me and for machineing my balance shaft when i wanted them turning down :O)

and jamie at evo tune for sorcing the joints for me :O)

as you can see only a small amount was removed to make the joint fit .

the shaft was made to mirror the inside of the joint and no more than that has been taken off than needed .

all i will say is the bearing center has moved around 8mm away from the diff up the shaft but the new outer part of the joint is around 10 bigger so seams to work out ok .

will let you know how they line up on the car when there fitted .

just waiting on some new cv gaiters as the e4 ones dont fit .

there on it all done and there perfect :O)


the car drives so much better with no more klunking and trailer hitching when you come off the throttle .

all i did do is swap the oil seal cover from the osr e4 joint to the osr e5 joint as it was different " just push on "
