got my shells fitted last week , there was still a little bit rattle off them , so crank was going to need to come out for grinding , and was hoping to have got back and forth to work ,which is less than 3-4 mins away , until pay day when i can buy all the bits to strip and rebuild , BUT... last night coming home from work the rattle turned into a clunk then every thing stoped , engine wont even turn over so something is stuck , so it looks like it's engine out for the strip and rebuild or replacement depending on the damage   ,so if anyone has any tips for an over haul that would be great ? funny how these things always happen in the middle of winter...

hi mate, if you rebuild try and get an evo 5 plus crank, evo 4 you mite get crank walk? But it is rare and these car's are getting old. If you have the money! Buy a e5 plus block or engine as they are stronger and better made. Bearing wise. Hope this help`s. I will hopefully rebuilding my block in the new year, but i have a 5 crank to go in already and will hopefully be up grading the piston's and rods. The piston's are big with big ring land's and weak on the ring land's. Hope this help`s. Let me no if you need any more help. Cheers.

thanks that helps , does the 4 block need mod.ing to fit the 5 parts? ,although i need to see what ive done to the block first with everything being 'stuck' , today i got all the elec's disconected and the coolant drained & hoses out , intake hoses out , engine oil drained & filter and cooler hoses disconected , fuel hoses out , so i'm nearly clear to remove the engine just drive shafts and prop shaft ,.... i do however have a few questions ?

1. is it possible to remove the engine without interupting my air con ? i was thinking about unbolting the pump and leaving on the hoses if possiple ?
2. same with the powersteering pump as above ?
3. i'm assuming the engine drops out as opposed to lifts out ?

any help would be great .

yeah i think you have to take it all off. Mite get away with leaving some pipe's and wire's on. The engine come's out the top. You should have 2 ring bracket's on the top end to lift it out. Hope this help. Nick.

you want to get a 5 block mate, the fault with the crankwalf on a 4 engine is in the block and no it cant be modified to overcome the problem. best to throw it away and start again.

yes you can leave the aircon pipes conected and remove the pumps from the engine

oh and engine and box will need to out the bottom then lift the car up and pull the engine and box out from underneath :)

thanks for the replys , out the bottom it is then , i'll be hoping to get the rest out this weekend and start striping it to see the damage , whats the easiest way of getting the belt off the pumps? , it's quite tight to see in clearly.

relese the tensioner buy inserting a 1/2" drive ratchet in the spring loaded tensioner, you can dog it in place by inserting a small screwdriver or drill bit through the 2 small holes which will hold it in place so you can get the belt off :)

well i got the engine out and started to strip down , my engine is DEAD :disgusted: there are bits of the conrod through the sump and embeded in the starter motor and throughout the block , no 4 piston has come off the conrod and went up into the head ,and the conrod has gone into lots of bits throughout the bottom end ...........

so new engine it is , anyone any advice on which one is best to go for ?
