rattling noises from head

hi , i am new to the forum and evo's and i'm looking for a little advice on my evo iv , driving away from a friends house the other day and noticed a small rattle at about 2500 rpm ,this has now started to develop into a louder rattle all the way through the rev range even when idling and start, and my oil light on the dash is now illuminated , i've checked the oil level and all is fine , and ive had the rocker cover off to inspect for anything obvious , but found nothing , reading through other forum posts on such problems i've seen a lot to do with lash adjusters but not being familiar with the evo iv engine (yet) wasn't sure how to spot a problem with these or if the lash adjusters are even my problem, any help or advice would be great.

If the oil light is on check the oil level if thats ok then check the oil pressure before you go any further

There is a pressure take off point in the oil filter housing you will need to hook up a gauge to it to read the oil pressure

Oil pressure at curb idel speed should be 78kpa or more at 90deg'c

Tested my oil pressure today at cold start i had 50 psi which would be about 370 kpa (ish) , after warming up this droped to 11 psi about 78 kpa , but after reving the engine once warm (to get the rattle, as it wasn't too bad just sitting ticking over this morning ) then droped to zero psi , but pressure increases when engine is reved , further more the noise seems to come from the top right of rocker cover when looking down on engine from front of car .

had the evo down at my local guy that apparently knows about evo's , he seemed to think the noise is due to the pistons hitting the head , i'm not very confident in what he has told me is correct as i feel the noises are more in the top of the head . do you think this is a possibility ?

the noise has now developed into a constant quick kluncking , so i'm thinking big end shells , gonna get the sump off this weekend and have a look , and probly pop the head off too to check every thing over , thanks for the help and i'll post my findings .

Hi Mate,

I had the same problem as this mate with my 4 - I took it to Mitsubishi and they said the same, the piston was hitting the head. But in the end, I found out that it was the big end shells that had gone in the bottom end, this is a common problem, as the 4 engine is week. Here's my thread I first posted up, its quite long:

I hate to say, but I had the exact same noise buddy - So I think its the big ends!!

thanks for the replys ,...had a read through your post 1982ollie thanks , how regular can i expect the big end shells to go , and is the knackered shells the same thing as what others call 'crank walk' or is this something else ? also is it possible to have the evo iv crank reground ?

today i took the sump off , found that no. 4 big end shell is really worn and floating about , so gonna get a set of new shells , crank seems ok , so shouldn't need reground , what oil should i be looking to put back in and what sealant should i use to stick the sump back on or is there a gasket ?

aright m8 glad you have found the problem its a sealant that u use el will give you the name off the best stuff to use sortly im sure, and as for oil get touch with the oilman on here you will get the best advice there and a great price i use 10 40 and never any problems bud
